Does a complete engine rebuild of a Testarossa by a Ferrari dealership adversely affect its value?

It wouldn't for me (might even add value as it reduces the total mileage of the engine unless they welded up the crankcase because it threw a rod out the side) -- but, of course, as a Buyer, it would just be a terrible negative factor requiring the Seller to drastically reduce the price ;). But it is a "story", and "stories" are generally viewed as a negative blemish regardless.

However, I also think that people who pay a premium for a low-mileage, not-regularly-used-and-sorted, garage-queen TR are just asking for a lot of future trouble and should've paid less.

With some of these buyers today I would say yes.

when was the rebuild done? last week or ten years ago? How many miles on the rebuild?

Thanks for the replies. I have owned and driven the car for eighteen years. I bought it in Dubai in 2004 and drove it for about a year and then imported it to Canada. I was told by the seller that the car belonged to the Sultan of Oman. I have not been able to authenticate that fact even though I have the service records from Oman.

The car arrived in Montreal and went straight to the Ferrari dealership as the coolant hose was dripping. The engine rebuild and a whole bunch of other things were done by Ferrari Quebec over a period of five years. The whole time the car stayed with them. I got the car back in 2010 with a big fat bill. It was on their recommendation that the engine rebuild was done.

I have driven about 20,000 kms since. It had a full service done just before the pandemic and I have hardly driven it since then.

I love the car and don't plan to sell it.

It is a very rare rebuild that is as good as an OEM original.

Think of how many botched ‘majors’ have been discussed on this board. A relatively ‘common’ procedure. A full rebuild is much more complex, much more rare (inexperienced techs) and has many more opportunities for a screwup.

A quality rebuild is extremely expensive. Typical owners put a lot of pressure on the tech to minimize costs.

Me? I’d take a garage queen that runs well AND passes a detailed PPI any day. Replacing seals and a detailed major will give you an OEM quality engine. So…. Yeah, a rebuilt engine would drop the car’s value to me in a big way…. especially if the rebuild was done recently (both miles and time).

A rebuilt engine adds risk and as such, the car must be discounted.
