Would you expect that at 50,00km that a Mondial 3.2 would require valve tappet clearance adjustment? Don't want to fiddle with a perfectly running vehicle, but at the same time don't want to defer appropriate maintenance. I understand that when this check is done, the clearances are often ok until quite high milage.

That depends on when the last time valve clearance was checked? Was it at 45Km, or 15Km? In general, valve tappet clearance is not known to go wildly out of specs,

If you are concerned, checking the clearance is pretty straight forward.

is it your car or are you considering a purchase ? either way, if you have no idea when a valve check service was performed on the car, then you should be very, very concerned. i don't want to alarm you but the car is basically due for it's second scheduled check/adjustment, and that is assuming the first one was done and the milage is accurate (and that is not always the case). this procedure is as fundamental as regular oil changes when it concerns a $25000 motor.
if it is your car, it is due, do not defer. these car can run reasonably well even when out of spec but you can not defer based on that.
if it is a car you're looking at purchasing, does it have a verifiable service history of the first check ? i don't mean a piece of paper, i mean something tangible, like pictures and invoices or at least reputable shop owner that will confirm, with notes and numbers, that his shop performed the service. you just don't do a service that significant without documenting many things.

I do own the car, purchased 3 years ago, was imported from Switzerland by a local reseller. Was an original owner. The 10,000km, 20,000km and 40,000km dealer stamps were in the warranty book, 40,000km done at 36,000km, car now has about 50,000km (had 42,000km when I purchased). The garage was Fritz Leirer, I had confirmed via phone (with some language difficulty and a bit of hesitance from them regarding privacy concerns for the original owner) with them that they had in fact done the stamps, but I didn't get specific as to whether all of the perscribed services were in fact done. Given the repute of the dealer (I think the largest in Switzerland on the German border), I presume if they stamped at 40,000Km which includes the valve check in the service guidelines that they had in fact doen this, but in hindsight I can not be completely sure. I had the car inspected by a local mechanic viewed as among the best in Canada (per FChat), and the belts were done and water pump bearing replaced, but I don't think he considered the possible deferred maintenance issue, really focused on the point in time condition.

The car has run pretty much flawlessly for me, and I have done the various checks, minor repairs, fluid changes, and a compressor change and 134 conversuion on the A/c, etc. as a hobby (I am ok, but far from expert on these things but like to learn and do my homework). Lots of fun. I would check the clearances myself, with a bit of FChat help if available, but it does look a bit of a job which I may be best getting done by an expert. Is it really that simple (the access to the rear bank looks kind of tight, I can imagine the fun of taking off the cam cover...replacing the rear bank distributor cap was a real pain...). I would prefer to wait for while, maybe wait to 60,000km and get it done along with the belts, and other things "while they are in there" at that time? Was wondering if there was any obvious signs or sounds (maybe with a stethescope) as to whether the valve clearances were correct, or if an inspection was the only way to tell. I am a perfectionist with this car. But I also know that fixing things before they break on an old car is not always a wise approach.

I appreciate the kind offer for further advice, thank you.

Without verified proof the work was ever done, what proof do you have exactly? Your choice seems clear cut. Drive on in ignorant bliss believeing all is well, or check them once and for all and log it for the future so someone else knows. Speculating that something might have been done has gotten more people in more trouble than anything else in all the world.

exactly. that's why my motto is " if you didn't see it done then you don't know **** ".

...but, if a good shop confirms that the work was done then that should go a long way toward having peace of mind.
