I have a mondial t 1993 , I am doing a major 30,000 service , I am at the stage of checking the valve clearences , in my handbook it tells me that the inlet valves should be in the range of 0.20 to 0.25 , the exhaust valves it says that they should be 0.35 to 0.40 range , my question is I have read some threads on this and find that the inlets are all the same for the uk cars and non uk cars , but the exhaust valves are different ,for the uk cars are 0.35 to 0.40 for american cars seem to be 0.30 to 0.35 , why is this , it is that I am a bit worried that I am going to use the wrong figures , can anyone explain this or is it that my manual is not correct ?

Can anyone with this sort of experience please let me know if I am correct in using the 0.35 to 0.40 for the exhaust valves on a uk model vehicle .

Thankyou in advance, also I have taken lots of pictures of the complete procedure of the engine out ,right up to where I am now, just have not posted due to lots of work on at the moment with my job ,but will do later, anyway thanks guys for any comments to the above, I need to know so as I can continue, due to the weather in the uk getting better. Thanks.

eek! -- I thought it was the other way around -- i.e., some cat-equipped versions ran slightly larger exhaust valve clearances than the non-cat versions. Previously, I had downloaded some of the US and non-US Mondial t OMs (e.g., 659/91 and 737/92), and they both list the 0.35-0.40 spec for the exhaust -- what is the print number for your 0.30-0.35 US reference?

Peppi -- "print number" is an identifying feature in the form of XXX/YY on most (all?) F manuals (where XXX is just a sequential number -- and I think they're up to 4 digits now, and YY is the year of publication) -- it's usually shown somewhere on the front or back cover or on the title page or last page. As I added to my earlier post, both of those mondial t OMs show the 0.35-0.40 spec for the exhaust so I'm sure that would be safest.

Hi Peppi: I made a chart in PowerPoint (can be edited) which you may find useful in keeping track of clearance measurements. I would be happy to send you the file if you want, just PM me with your e-mail address. You can then simply change the clearance numbers for your application. It looks like this:

Thankyou ShanB if you could do that it would be great , my email address is [email protected] , also your previous thread on your engine out job , made me think about checking the difference in exhaust valve clearances because yours I noticed where 0.30 to 0.35 where mine say 0.35 to 0.40 , so I just wanted to make sure that my figure of 0.35 to 0.40 was correct , the way Steve make me understand I think there is a difference if you have cats fitted or not , well mine have cats fitted, but I need to check my workshop manual also . Thankyou ShanB and yes please send me the file so as I can use your diagram so as I can keep a neat reference for the gaps readings that I find . regards Peppi.

Sorry forgot to mention ShanB ,did you remove the crankshaft pulley to change the oil seal , if yes did you have a tdc mark behind the pulley , or did you need to make your own mark before you removed your cambelt, then when you removed the pulley was there a mark there already from the factory or is it best to make your own mark and go by that . I have not removed my cambelt yet. Thanks Shane.

Peppi - check your e-mail. Yes - the crank pulley comes off to change the oil seal. It only goes on in one position as it is indexed to the crankshaft by an insert. You will see once you take it off. It is still a good idea to mark TDC before you take the belt off for comparison later and note how the camshaft timing marks line up at TDC. While you are checking valve clearances I also suggest you measure any shims you have to remove as well as the new replacements - they are frequently thicker or thinner than indicated.
