Hi we are new members and we have a 81 308 gtsi and a 79 308 gts. We are doing a major service on the gtsi . Our cam shaft timing marks do not line up with the marks on the bearing caps when the engine is at top dead center on cylinders 1-4 (all 4 cams seem slightly advanced) Question? when we install new timing belts, can we line up all the marks and dispense with the complete degreeing process. Thanks for any comments Appreciate the feedback
Technically, you install new timing belts, with all the marks lined up, then you pull out the degree wheel to get to the final positions. Off the records, the 2V engine is not that sensitive so if you get the marks to line up after the belts are on, you would be good to go.
If he can see the timing marks ( valve covers off) wouldn't you assume there is deeper surgery going on?
If it ran well before you got into it, then it will run well if you replace the belts and not move anything. If you have no experience with cam timing, just change the belt and enjoy your car. I have seen a number of Ferrari engines that the marks are not perfect but the numbers are right after degreeing. Also, don't be surprised if the marks are a little closer after the new belt is on. A little belt stretch can make a big difference, again, just mark it and change the belts. Drive on.
