With all the talk of valves I was just wondering if there was an "about" mileage when they go, or is it just something to look at when doing the 30K? I know most people seem to think or say that the headers start to go at or about 16k. Just wondering about the valves..:) Thanks for the time.

I've seen it all over the board, so I would not sweat it. I've seen 1995 cars needing the work before 10k miles have gone by, and later cars going into the low to mid 20k's. And many others haven't needed it...mine is at 48k (Feb 1997 production), just had a major service at the dealer and all was well. Go figure...

+1 .......... mine is in the mid 30k and it runs perfectly....... so here is my shameless rant...... when the cars get used regularly, the lubricants get spread around the engine as it should..... if you let them sit the oil drains off the cylinder walls and critical interfaces causing accelerated wear when the engine finally gets to breath .................. use it or lose it.........!!

Most engine wear begins at start up.

Are you talking valves or valve guides? Are there many cases of the valves going (I guess wearing to the point of not seating correctly?)

Both. Just wanted to know if there was a time frame when they start to go bad. My car is a '95 and some say it is the worst year for this...:( I'll have them looked at when I do my 30k (in about 1 year or so) but just wondered.

Good point. I drive mine at least 3 times a week AND always cruise around in 2nd gear until water and oil temps are up to operating conditions...baby it if you will. Change all fluids every year, (gear oil every 2), and do the required maitenance. As I mentioned in the Head Rebuild post, I don't know if my guides were done or not but she's running strong at 42K miles.

Has anyone determined if it's the guide material or a bad setup by Ferrari? That could explain the variance in mileage when the need to be replaced. Other cars have come with bronze guides without these kinds of issues. Too much clearance would easily explain these failures.

I was thinking a similar thing today. I have built a few race motors that have all had bronze guides fitted, I do not own all these motors any more, but none had failure during my ownership and some did high miles under plenty of pressure.

Perhaps it is like Oz said, if left the guides dry up and then wear heavily on start up, maybe there is some correlation between cars that sit and cars that need guides due to failure.

    I drive my cars.....
