I'm driving my 360 coupe to Tahoe, Napa, Monterey (FCA meet), Big Sur, Yosemite, & San Fran this summer. Can anyone shed some light on the safety of leaving my car alone in these areas? Thank you.

How about "are there any spots where my car WON'T be vandalized or stolen on norcal?" Make it fast through the east bay, and youll be ok. Dont get off the freeway in oakland. Yes people will carjack you. Tahoe does have a few weirdos though so watch out there. San francisco should be alright. Where will you stay?

I have never had any problems leaving my cars anywhere in the wine country. I would not leave a car alone in San Francisco though unless it is parked in a residential area and hopefully in the driveway of someone you know. I sold a car to a SF resident and it was severely keyed not long after. I have had cars broken into in broad daylight on a busy street downtown so would avoid that. I really think the danger is only in the more hard core urban areas though and would not worry about the burbs or the rural areas in most of the state. I see 360's parked in my town fairly often and have seen much more expensive models left out overnight with no problems. Hope that helps.

Just don't leave food in your car in Yosemite. The bears will rip your car to pieces!

Pretty safe, except for San Francisco. Stay in a good hotel, and tip big is my advise. They'll leave your car in front all the time.

I had mine keyed in a suburban office complex, right in the parking lot, in SIlicon Valley.
    Animals live everywhere.
I am installing a trick camera in mine. I will continue to drive it places and leave it. And if it gets damaged I will have a record.

Have fun with your trip. It is all down to karma and chaos theory in the end.

Have you been here lately? Where are you from? I drove through hayward in a 360 and had a few crackheads start walking twards the car at stoplights/stopsigns. Hayward isnt as bad as oakland. Napa is nothing, but the east bay sure isn't safe.

...the stretch of 880 from Fremont to Oakland is like driving through hell. I turn on the classical music station and pretend that it does not bother me. Suddently all the rules are out the window, you are surrounded by semis, and when it comes to your fellow drivers....they are apparently exempt from acting like civilized human beings. I could make comparisons to driving in some third world countries, but being an immigrant myself, I know it would probably ire somebody, somewhere, real quick.
Just thinking about it caused me to insert the compilation of Chopin waltzes into the cupholder on my Dell.

I would suggest not parking it anywhere in East bay, except for some residential areas of Alameda.

Lived here 3.5 years and so far the toll is:

    1) Stolen brand new motorcycle with 41 miles on the ODO, from underground locked garage.

    2) Sunroof stolen, and headlights stolen from in front of house

    3) Another car keyed all the down to the metal and slashed tires.

No I don't have any enemies and have 2 friends in the whole bay area

Good luck, and enjoy your time in the Bay area.

I live here in the Bay area and frequently make weekend trips to all the places you mention in both my Ferrari and Lamborghini. What I believe has helped keep me incident free is that I put a cover on it overnight. Also, I am careful in where I stay. In San Francisco I would keep it in a secure hotel garage, definitely not out on the street overnight (daytime OK).

San Francisco should be alright? You kidding?

With the the parking spaces being miniscule, bicycles, and lost tourists I would stay outta there. Much safer in Oakland.

Carjacking happens in Brazil....or Russia. I would not sweat it. Oakland is kinda shee shee anymore.

Biggest risk in Tohoe is drunks.

    Let's see...did I leave anyone out?

You have got to be kidding me! In the last 3.5 years I know of 4 people who have had cars jacked in Oakland!

Maybe you are very well off and can spare a few cars, but for us commoners, parking anything in oakland, is like saying goodbye to it already.

After LA and Miami, Northern Calif. has to be in third place for Ferrari ownership. They are not an uncommon sight. Add to that the hundreds of Ferraris that will be traveling to Monterey in August from all over the country. Common sense and street smarts work here, too. Driving through Oakland on the Freeway is not the same as parking in front of a liquor store in the 'hood. Unless you just have to score some crack, there's no need to venture into areas where your car and you aren't safe. You will have no worries in Napa, Yosemite, or Monterey. Since you have good taste in cars, I assume that carries over to lodgings. If you stay at a nice hotel, your car will be fine. Plan ahead, though. Some of the nice little boutique hotels in SF have no provision for parking. If you would like, you can leave your Modena and keys "safely" with me in the burbs and I'll let you run around SF in my beater Beemer!

I parked right at the front door of a restaurant in San Francisco and after dinner my wife and came out and found our car covered with eggs (at least a dozen). Drove through Oakland many times with no problems, although I would be careful as you would driving a nice sports car anywhere.

Oakland is safer than Wichita, Cleveland, Houston, and Minneapolis. This may speak for itself, then follow the link at the bottom:

These cities have the lowest crime rates in the country.

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) -- Working with data provider On Board, we looked for the cities in America that had the fewest reported crimes per 1,000 citizens. This list only includes cities with a population of at least 300,000, of which 56 are listed in the FBI's crime statistics. (Not all cities report crime statistics every year.) Figures are from data for 2001, the latest year available. These statistics are for the specific municipalities mentioned as defined by the FBI and do not include suburbs or other outlying areas.

    here is the link:

    http://money.cnn.com/pf/features/lists/safest_cities/

And here are the worst...in there is Portland, Seattle, and a host of others that may suprise you.

    http://money.cnn.com/pf/features/lists/unsafest_cities/

    PS....

Did not mean to "hijack" this thread (grin)

yeah I'll 2nd that.. the east bay I know is pretty nice. Walnut Creek, Diablo, Alamo, Danville. Blackhawk, San Ramon, Pleasanton are all towns full of expensive cars. Basically dont park on street in San Francisco, Oakland or Berkeley and you eill be fine. Besides u should check out the Blackhawk car musuem lots of nice cars.

Hmmm... and I don't think all cities report those statistics the same way! Those lists seem fairly random. There are "safe" cities that I know aren't as safe as some of the "unsafe" cities; and vice-versa. Weird.

I lived in SF for 2 years & I lived at Tahoe for 5 years. Tahoe is beautiful but its very close to Reno where Beavis lives . if you go to SF I would stay on the West side looking towards Alcatraz, STAY OUT of the Tenderloin & dont take the 360 to the Haight. In SF I like Union St, Its where I used to hang, As you go W you take a Left on union, Chestnut St is nice too as is the waterfront nearby where Ghirardelli Square is. Chinatown is nice but I wouldnt park the 360 there. Union Square, different from Union St has nice shops but its right on the edge of the Tenderloin where all the druggies & theives hang. I never understood why they put a square w Nieman Marcus & so many high end stores Right next to the worst hood in downtown SF

    Have a good trip:)

There are no problems in these 'upper end' towns aside from wheel theft in the valley. However this is the Tri Valley area. NOT th east bay. The east bay ends before the 580 Dublin grade. Over the hill is worse. Castro valley is
becoming bad San Leandro and will be bad oakland at this rate in 2 years.
