Anyone make it to the Vanderbilt Cup Races. It was a show and exhibition. Some cars were SCCA timed and others were not. Any recognizable cars in the pics.
Turnout was a bit light but possibly due to the frigid wind chill. Overall I would expect that this should grow. Cannot see why it would'nt.

Ugh, guess im stupid with this vbulletin. I changed the permissions to yes but it still displays view attachments as no. So not sure what the issue here is. My intention was to just show some pictures to everyone. Doh!

I've been to this event in the past. Guy did a nice job and there were some interesting cars, but it is relatively small and I think that is what it will remain.

Any particular reason why you think it will remain small?

There was 1 incident but luckily all were ok.

Seems like it was a big secret - no real marketing. Also, this event is searching for an identity; the organizers go from one format to the next and haven't established what they want this event to be.

I think the main purpose of the event is to celebrate the birth of international motor racing on long island and the country via the Vanderbilt Cup. And also as a whole to celebrate the rich history of motor racing on Long Island.

Yes, I understand that component of it. Actually for a while up until 10 years ago the Vanderbuilt races were held at Bridgehampton in conjunction with the SCCA. Somehow it has morphed into what it is today. What I meant was that a couple of years ago, this (the new event) was a series of races near the old Mitchell Field in Uniondale; now its some timed runs up a driveway(?) like at Goodwood. So its been legitimate races, pseudo races, and timed runs - what is it going to be next, an autocross at Tobay? ;)

Tazio Nuvolari won the Vanderbilt Cup in 1936. He was the first Italian to win it, and his presence here caused quite a stir. From gangsters who bet against him and tried to muscle him to "take a dive", to his car not firing on all cylinders, to the announcers of the race promising $1,000 to the first person who could pass him for a whole minute - he dazzled 200,000 spectators at Roosevelt Field. By the fifth lap of the race, he was lapping some of his opponents. Tazio was the man.

I get what you are saying. Someone must have complained about the noise also becuase the cops showed up asking for permits.
And one car hit a tree pretty hard.

What happened with Mitchell Field? Do you know any particular reason they stopped doing what they did in the past over there?

Regarding Mitchell Field, they were supposed to have total access to a series of inner roadways in the office park to the west side of the Nassau Coliseum. They ran events on those roads but the organization was appalling. I don't think they were allowed to do it anymore because it was fairly dangerous. There were incidents of people driving the wrong way on the "closed" road while a race was going on! I think this in addition to them never being on or close to schedule was a problem.

What kind of car hit the tree? Do you know what caused the accident?

That's a shame about Mitchell Field, sounds like it was more interesting with the racing. But unfortunately sounds like you said not well organized and a bit dangerous.
The Nassau museum of Art does have a nice setting.

Yes I saw the accident as I was close by. They had cones set up so left, right, lefts like "essess" throughout the course.
He was coming in quick in the section I was watching. It appeared he over corrected, might have hit some dirt. There was a curve at this point as well. So as soon as he started to over correct the car started to skid sideway and boom off the "course" and into a tree. Was a hard hit. He was driving with a small girl in the car to.. Luckily they were both wearing helmets and appeared ok.
It was a grey Honda S2000. I overheard someone saying he had no insurance either, but I do not know if that is true or not.

Glad to hear they were both wearing helmets and are all right. It just goes to show you how dangerous it is to run at events like this. Letting people take children in the car with them under conditions like that is pure madness.

I agree and some participants were not even wearing helmets at all.

Really is crazy to have folks running w/o any helmets. But to have a child in the car and lose control is absolute stupidity - thank goodness no injuries. Yeah they just are a bit willy-nilly with this event and I think that is why it will never grow into a major event, also I really don't believe they want a major event, part of the appeal for those who attend.
