I was reminded of why I don't watch these shows. At least they didn't say anything lame about the Vector. Everything past the intro was a waste of time. I'm not even sure I'd want to see any of those guys drive the car.
Uggg. Some one woke me up for that. They did 2 days of filming with the Vector and that is all they showed. If you blinked you missed it. A good example of why I don't watch that show. Where are the other 2 days of filming? Christ I had to walk out to my garage to actually see a Vector W8 because I felt I was cheated by the show. Go on to show me a Nobel/Rossi kit car and a naturally aspirated S7, not even a twin turbo. Then that other POS that I don't even remember the name of. It was 54 seconds of getting me interested in what comes next, followed by an hour of boredom. I give David an A+ for effort and providing the car, but Top Gear gets a D- for delivery.
USA Top Gear is tough to watch. Then again, save for the Stig's Power Laps, I can't watch UK Top Gear either. Too many biased jokes and lame evaluation criteria (comments on SAT/NAV, stiff ride, etc.). I know David did a superb job of prep and I was looking forward to seeing it rip off a high 11 sec 1/4 mile or 1.0g. There was not even a display of the incredible Kevlar construction or the dash display? I guess some Vector exposure is better than none in the grand scheme. I too was expecting at least some sort of testing or more footage...sigh... LS
Wow even by TGUSA standards that was a lame show. The SL Black piece was laughable. There's no car lust on this show- and the attempts at humor are embarrassing.
Considering the title of the episode was "American Supercars" they could have at least driven an American car at the end as the "prize"...like the W8! Which they had!
The only good news after that episode is that sooner, rather than later this show will be off the air.
Sadly I turned the show on a few min late and missed the Vector. Here is what I don't get.. if the show was about American supercars that could compete with the Europeans, why didn't they include a Viper and a ZR-1? Putting a 10 year old S7 against an Aventador makes no sense. Putting that weird kit car Tanner drove against a modified GT3 RS (not even the newest version) also makes no sense. They could have made a pretty cool show if they would have put a little effort in. It seems like they came up with it all in about 10 min. And I agree that the SLS Black as the prize, also made no sense. Should have been a real American Supercar...real Cobra, or GT40 or something.
Alex, good points. Even a GT500 vs M3 or Viper vs 911 comparo with some sort of logic behind it would've been interesting. Then again, we would've had the host driving one and the other being driven by an assumed professional (The Stig)...ARGH I had to fast forward through most of it. I did record the later broadcast to catch the Vector scenes. Damn, that is a cool car...even 57 secs of it... LS
I was hoping to see how the W8 did around the track with the Stig driving it. All these suggestions of how well the car performs, top speed, etc. and what we get is a fanboy behind the wheel doing beauty shots.
A hell of a waste of the opportunity to show us what a Vector can do! For lap times, why not let the Stig do ALL of the timed laps? We are not watching the show to determine what DRIVER was fastest, so why not remove driving talent (or lack thereof) from determining what CAR is fastest? BTW: the bit about the photos and covering up the Bugatti was beyond lame.
Regarding the black, I believe Merc sponsored the show, correct? Was also disappointed in the selection of cars. Then again, the US does not have much. I thought the S7 was limited production and a thing of the past, no? Hennesey makes a model that you can buy i think. I recorded it just to see them run a Vector. Did it have issues forcing a re-planning of the show or did they not plan to run it in the first place?
From a performance perspective, the American offerings include Z06, ZR1, Viper ACR and new TA, and Ford GT. You can poo-poo them in terms of production quantity or nor being "exotic," but the first 4 in this list are all faster than the 458 and AMG SLS Black and that is all driven by Randy Pobst. Go check out the Motor Trend Laguna Seca lap times.
Using a real track also would have been a step in the right direction. If they were going to use kit cars, they could have at least used an Ultima. The S7 they used was one of the early NA models. In 2005(?) the went to a twin turbo motor with either 750 or 1000 hp. That could have made for a more interesting battle with the Lambo. If they really wanted to put America against Europe.. I would love to see the Viper ACR against a 599 GTO.
