I've decided to give being a vegetarian a try for 30 days. Any tips? Anyone here try it? All the vegetarians I know swear by it, and they are all healthier/skinnier than the rest of my friends...:)

(PS did a search and didn't find anything relevant)

What type of vegetarian are you going to try? Completely no dairy, just fish, just fish, etc?

Make sure you take vitamins. Watch your soy intake because of the estrogen thing.

Just because they appear healthier doesn't necessarily mean they are.

    Good luck.

There's the key, right there. Why do you think they take vitamins? Because they do not get it from the food they eat/not eat. Humans are meant to eat meat. Our teeth are made to chew meat. The list goes on!

Vegetarians are going against what is natural and healthy for humans. Now go have a steak tonight.

    Estrogen thing?

I'm not eating any meat, but still eating dairy products. I take a multivitamin every day anyway, should I take anything else (i.e. specific vitamins I'll be missing?)

problem is I've eaten too much red meat....want to lose some weight, get the cholesterol down, etc. I'm sure after a month I'll be jonesing for a bacon cheeseburger!

Apparently soy can increase estrogen levels in men. I'm not sure to what degree, or how much research has been done. Just something I've read before.

I can't specify any vitamins in particular, I just know that's one thing I've always heard.

How much red meat are you consuming per week? Cut it down to once or none and substitute fish and chicken for it. At least after you give the vegetarian thing a try.

okay, I don't drink soy milk so Ill just watch the tofu intake :)

I would eat red meat 2-3 times a week. that was 2-3 times too many, I think. Ate lots of chicken too...I don't do seafood here in the midwest :(

already take fish oil. I'll check into flaxseed

Back in my youth, I was a veg. for maybe several years. The first thing that happened was a weight loss and I wasn't heavy to begin with. I was pretty strict and ate no dairy and no junk stuff. My doctor loved the results in my blood work and I felt healthy. It is just hard to do and so is trying to eat healthy which is what I'm trying to do now.
I don't think we have teeth like a lion but more like a cow. I don't think we are set up for meat 3x a day. Not only that from time to time it bothers me that animals are treated awful for our food chain. If I had to kill and prepare meat, I would be a veg. again. Most of the charts for protein requirements are high, high and are not accurate. It is my belief that we eat 6x the amount of protein that we actually need. Chart was based on rats if I recall. It is much greener to go vege with less impact on mother earth. A diet with lots of fruit and veg. and some meat is still a good choice.

Though many a vegetarian thinks their **** doesn't stink, nothing could be further from the truth.
