    Hello. I'm a prospective owner of a 328 GTS. I hope to find one by the time we get a real spring. I am planning to see a nice '88 Chiaro Blue 328 GTS in the Boston area soon and I am wondering about the consequences of Chicago area vehicle emissions testing if I were to bring this car in from out of state.

    I have seen the Carfax for the car and it has been passing MA's emissions tests on a regular and current basis.

    I can't quite decipher IL regs on exempt vehicles as to whether or not I will have to have the car pass the test one time before registration. Of the many exemptions, I found two that are most likely to apply to my situation. From the "Air Team" website under exempt vehicles:

    1. "Vehicles of model year 1995 or before that were in compliance with the Illinois Vehicle Emissions Inspection Law on February 1, 2007;

    2. Vehicles registered in, subject to, and in compliance with the emission inspection requirements of another state"

    To me, it appears that in item 1, a 1995 or older vehicle that passed a test in or after '07 no longer has to be tested. Item 2 appears to merely apply to out of state registered vehicles operating here.

    My questions is, do we have someone out there with recent experience of bringing an out of state 1995 or older car to Illinois and registering here? Was an emissions test required at anytime?

    I would like to avoid a surprise (additional expense) before enjoying ownership.

    Regards,
    Lew

    I think if the car is 15 years or older, you are exempt from the smog testing. I have owned an 87 328 for 6 years and have never been required to have the emission testing.

    I think 1995 and older cars are exempt as they do not have the OBD II computer emissions checking ability. I know I brought my '93 348 in from out of State and never had to have it tested. My 1996 Porsche on the other hand still had to be tested.

    Correct on the 95 and older rule. No matter where it comes from, as long as its before 95 no testing required.

    Thanks for the replies, guys. That is one less thing to be concerned about. I don't like surprises that cost.
