One of my very favorite albums/CDs of all time is "Velvet Underground Live 1969 volume 1". This is a sublime masterpiece collection of Lou Reed and the Velvets recorded in small bars in front of small crowds with basically no sound engineering or serious professional involvement. The sound quality on some is pretty poor, but the raw energy is amazing. Lisa Says, Rock and Roll and Beginning to See the Light I can listen to over and over.

In 1991 I lost this album. I looked everywhere for it, shopped everywhere for a replacement (I found the original used at a Grateful Dead show) and failed to either find it or replace it. This SUCKED. I seriously missed this CD.

I found it yesterday. How it got to where it did and how it escaped me for so long I will never know, but it ROCKS to have it again!

Does anyone by any chance have Volume 2 of this set??????

Anyone else got any very early live recordings of the Velvet Underground?

    Terry,
I just found both volumes, I & II on CD, new, at Amazon.com
Do a seach in Music for Velvet Underground Live. Refine your search for non-live.
Also Live at Max's and Live at Voodoo Fest

I have found what I thought was long forgotten out of print music on CD's there, both new and used.

I used to have 1969 on vinyl. It was not a reissue. First Velvet Underground album I bought. Their reputation preceded them, and certainly, I'd had my share of Lou Reed's better efforts, but I was

Aside from Loaded and Live at Max's, Kansas City, I purchased their Nico & White Light, White Heat & Velvet Underground albums when they were reissued along with the "lost" album, released as 'V.U.' - all on vinyl.

I eventually purchased Loaded, but it was a gift for a friend and on CD. Not up to snuff, IMHO.

I spent days dialing in the cartridge & tonearm balance on my phono, treated my records delicately, changed needles often and to this day, 1969 remains my favorite.

    Here comes the Ocean...

I LOVE VU. I have the CD's for the Quine Tapes in my living room changer.
I think often about getting a turntable for the vinyl experience. Actually back a few years ago, I met Penn Gilette when he was having an implant put in his ear (basically a small wire to replace the stirrup I believe) and we chatted for a bit about good old Lou and my youth hanging around Max's and the other haunts in the early 80's as a tiny kid in tube socks and the VU live @ Max's recording. I had no idea, I just thought it was a dumpy place my dad used to take me to.

    Yeah, NASTY habit!
I have spent some serious money re-updating my vinyl to CD's. Much of the material on the CD's has been remastered and actually sounds better than some of the vinyl I have.

Some good deals on out of print stuff if you don't mind used. I learned how to buff out scratches and imperfections in CD's to new condition.

I just picked up a complete, still in the original box, 4 CD set of Tangerine Dream-Tangents (mid 70's to mid 80's), used but nearly perfect. Out of print these days. SCORE!.

I bought it Dave.... THANKS! Cannot wait for it to get here.

VU has got to be the best "garage band" ever! I have Loaded, but honestly do not care for it very much. The Velvets ruled live... in the studio, not so much. I suspect they sobered up for the recording sessions and it ruined it.

Another great thing I found was new and used DVD's of hard to get movies on Amazon.

I just picked up the David Lynch version of Dune-(directors cut) and Blade Runner-(directors cut), both with extras.

    One comment: Velvets rule!

    Art S.

PS. I like them on vinyl - fits the low fi character of the group.

I have Loaded, but honestly find it weak. The Velvets were great live in a small club type atmosphere just going at it. But put them in a professional studio with sound engineers and managers and all..... the energy vanishes. Perhaps it was the smack that vanished? Either way, live they were the greatest proto-punk garage band ever.

First 3 Studio albums are fantastic for different reasons. They sparkle. Loaded was not fantastic and fell flat for a larger variety of reasons. There is no "there" there. It also had poor sound quality. Flat. No sparkle.

Velvet Underground with Nico - All about All Tomorrow's Parties / Whole Picture
    White Light/White Heat - Tomorrow's Party Unhinged / Point / Excess
Velvet Underground - Day after the Party / Counterpoint / Restraint

    4th studio album -
Loaded - Middle of Road - Sweet Jane and Rock and Roll are keepers, though.

    Factoids:
    First album -
    Nico on 3 tunes.

    Second album -
Reed, Cale, Morrison, Tucker tore it up without the original Goth rocker - Nico.

    Third album -
Amps were stolen just before recording sessions.
Doug Yule "replaced" the (until then) highly experimental Cale.
As studio recordings go, Doug was the weakest link - as Live albums go - he was the strongest.

    Loaded -
Mo Tucker - irreplaceable drummer and occasional singer extraordinaire was absent as she was pregnant.
Doug Yule not only sang on a few tunes -
His brother, Billy was drummer. Billy was no Mo Tucker.
Sterling Morrison was a bit busy with University at the same time.
By the time Loaded was released - Lou Reed, who claimed songwriting credit on all tunes on Loaded - though it wasn't all his - moved back home with his folks.
By '71 - Sterling Morrision was teaching at Austin Univesity... did a bit of touring under Velvet Underground name... without Lou Reed. Like Loaded, it was a muddled time.

Are you thinking of the version of the song that opens "Rock and Roll Animal"?

I agree though. IMO it is by far the best guitar intro of any song ever. Not sure if that was really part of the VU or not, either way, it's rock 'n 'roll at its finest.

I apologize for resurrecting such an old thread, but I heard a live version of Heroin, which lead to searching for VU on You Tube.

Now I have Lou Reed's "Street Hassle" stuck in my head.
And so I'm posting here in hopes that someone here knows what that's like...

    Sha-la-la-la, man.

Just today I mentioned Lou Reed in connection with Iggy Pop & David Bowie discussing 70s edgy music. Love "Perfect Day" from winter Olympics - gives me chills.

I just was listening to this a few weeks ago in my Miata. The cassette still sounds amazingly good to be as old as it is. My OEM player still works great too. Just took this pic for you.
