I wise man once told me:

    Don't open it.

    Don't close it.

    Don't touch it.

    Don't even look at it.

    Ummm...

    Yes, a wise man indeed!!!

Don't touch the vent windows. Especially the latch.

You can open and close 'em if you really feel the urge, just don't EVER latch them.

i drove a car today where the vent window has not latch and no way of opening...is this normal.
the car was restored, could they have simply closed up the vent window?

Here is the story. No one wants the latches to fall off again. I fixed mine so they don't. In fact, the wind wings work much better than AC if the car is moving. So far, so good since the fix.

No original car is immune to the problem. Latch base is too small. Glass is not strong enough. Make base larger.

they don't work much even when as original. they are poorly designed in their hinging and the latching mechanism is even more poorly designed.

i hate to say it, but don't mess with them. if they don't seem to easily move, foget it. i agree with the don't touch them warning.

My 71 euro has holes in the glass through which the catches fit and they open and close fine, i just dont see any reason to use them. I did however recently barely touch the one on my friend Johns Dino and then had to walk over to him with it still in my hand to explain how it came off.He kindly said its been off several times but i am not sure he was impressed. His lovely lady friend (soon to be wife ) who was in the passenger seat at the time found it highly amusing but remained in hiding behind the paper she was reading just in case. I guess i am with the others on this one just dont touch it and hope it stays put.

I just posted my first ad. It is free with a subscription and was very easy to do. Also, many people will share/fill out their profile.

I have the same problem on my Daytona. To my knowledge neither car ever had a hole in the glass. So they invariably fail. I like the "hole" idea. It won't fail and looks period correct.

There is another solution. It is a part like a money clip and it is out of the AMC parts bin.

don't use Cyanoacrylate(instant)glue, I used it the first few time and it didn't last. I switched to a-b epoxy with metal fiber, and it is still holding on after 2 years. I sand the base with rough sanding paper, and clean the window very well with alcohol before applying glue.

I can't imagine not using the vent windows. My car is black on black with no AC. Yesterday, I drove 400 km in 29 degree weather (250m/85F), with the vent windows providing a nice breeze all the way. The windows themselves don't let enough air in to cool the interior.

If you use the proper adhesive and close the vent window by pushing the glass in (not pulling on the catch), it's usually 10 years between catch re-glues.
