My apologies if this is a FAQ, but I did some searches and couldn't find anything.

My '83 308 has vents behind the rear tire that appear to pick up air from inside the fenderwell and channel it to the muffler area.

    What are these for?

So air will go from the rear fender area to the muffler area.

I think it was designed to help cool the catalytic converter(s).

These vents first appeared when catalytic converters were introduced. They vent away some of the heat produced with the cats. Actually the cat. cars have three visible differences to get rid of heat:

    1. The vents you spoke of.
    2. Extra louvers on the engine cover.
    3. Extra holes cut out of each side on the rear panel just under the bumper.
