So, I dropped my Razr in the pool, and I decided to get a used Blackberry 7250 to replace it because I was not eligible for a new phone for a while. I tried to activate the device through Verizon, but I just want to use the phone features, and not the data for the time being until work starts. Verizon told me that I need to upgrade to a data plan in order to activate the phone. In other words, they told me there is no way to activate the device to just be a phone. Does anyone have advice on this? Is this true? Is there a way to get around this---like add data feature to my plan to activate the phone, and then drop the data portion after a month or so? thanks for any help

The point of a BlackBerry is generally for data features (e-mail). If you're not going to use that..why did you get a BB? Sounds like it could be correct. The only thing would be is if by data you meant using the phone to teather as a modem, in which case that is optional on your plan.

I just activated my blackberry and asked about this as well. I used it for business but hated it, I couldn't put it in my pocket. And I hate to say you absolutely need a data package, the BB is 24/7 trying to check your server for emails. The Motorola Q doesn't require a data package..

Thanks for the replies---I got a blackberry because I found it for cheap and I will need data service within a few months, so I did not want to buy 2 phones within a few months....thanks

I have had so many cell phones. In fact I have about 15-20 cellphones in one of my closets.

Anyway the Blackberry is one of the best phones. It is pricey but I think its def worth it.

No, I really dropped my phone in a swimming pool.
Has anyone heard of signing up for the Verizon "Pay as you go" data plan in order to activate the Blackberry's phone portion? thx
