I just completed a personal 1 year study on VFR flyable days between my hometown airport BCB (Virginia Tech) and Naples, FL (APF). It seems like everyone talks about Florida being a pilot's heaven so I chose Naples as a test airport. Everyday I looked at the METARs and TAFs and looked at ceilings, visibility, winds and precip. I gave a score of either a full day of VFR, 1/2 day of VFR or a non VFR day. This study ran from mid Feb 2011 to mid Feb 2012. So it included 2 different seasons of winters. Naples had 225.5 VFR flyable days. Virginia Tech had 264.5 VFR flyable days. I guess Florida is the sometimes sunshine state and Virginia is for flying lovers!

there is a lot of local convective activity in Florida that can shut a VFR pilot down, particularly during the afternoon going into early evening when the heat from the day is at its' highest until it cools down. Typical forcasts always include "possible afternoon and evening showers" or " fog or resitricted visibility overnight"... On the ground it is only a short local inconvenience to an otherwise sunny day, an airplane covers a lot of territory and has a high probability of running into this local weather
