    I need a small video camera (bigger and more robust than my recently departed Flip.) I'd like to have something I can mount to a clamp or suction cup tripod in or on vehicles. (my 5d Mk II is to big, heavy and expensive.) I have not kept up with video tech in the past 10 years or so. I'd prefer to stick with Canon but don't have a good reason. I'm mostly curious about what recording media is best--tape, disc, Compact Flash, whatever---don't even know what's out there right now. I am interested in getting the vid into iMovie and goofing around with editing and what not. Please keep in mind it would also be used for family stuff.

    Budget is ~$1k. We don't have to spend it all!

    Thanks!

    My 02c, FWIW;

    - Hard drive based camcorders do not work too well when mounted in cars - Maybe OK in a big ol' Maybach (!), but (race car) vibration kills 'em.

    Tape is OK, but *so* 20th century..... Solid state is the way to go.

    What happened to your Flip? I've seen some *really* good stuff shot with the HD version and one of it's advantages for in-car use is it's very low mass - It has a tripod mount and can be suctioned to just about anything given it's small size. Someone here posted an HD vid shot with it mounted in the bumper for example - Very cool.

    Cheers,
    Ian
    PS - You may be better off asking this in the "technology toys" section (?)

    A friend of mine has a Sanyo Xacti, really nice camera, I don't like the shape, but there are a few other versions. Shoots 1080p (full HD), and has a good zoom.

    If you want to stay with Canon, I would go for a Canon Vixia HF S200.

    Like Ian said, I wouldn't mount them on a car, if you need to mount to a car, use a GoPro HD or a ContourHD.

    For a budget of $1000 a Canon T2i is within reach. Full 1080p HD video recording, solid state memory (flash cards), and a great still machine to boot. Suits me! :)

    How about a point&shoot with video capabilities. I have a Canon SD940IS that I carry around with my 5D "just in case". It does HD video, but I have yet to use it for video. It's about the size of a credit card, but thicker. :)
