Finally stepped up and bought a GoPro Hero3 for the cockpit. Apologies in advance for poor picture and sound quality. First attempt at mounting the camera today, will try a different location next lesson, as i would love to get the controls in the frame. Pretty good lesson today, set a flight plan to KSBD, then instructor said "we have an emergency we have to land at KEMT". The lesson was to see if i could manage to get onto an airport when i was 5500 above it and about 2 miles out. I did a very shallow 360 to loose height (with ATC permission of course), and made a pretty good landing by my standards. Did some pattern work ( about 5 circuits) had to do some "S" turns on final for spacing and some 360's in the downwind and one on final for the same reason. first time Ive done that. At first its quite disconcerting flying like that, so close to the ground when you mind is all set up for short final. My instructor was happy with how i handled it, but inside i was a nervous wreck.. Made my first big screw up coming back into Van Nuys, the runways where reversed, which was my first distraction, then even though i was cleared for and acknowledged landing 34L, I lined up with 34R (short runway), just so used to them always giving us the short runway unless we request the big one that my mind did not comprehend what my mouth was saying. My instructor picked it up and even asked me "what was our clearance" to which i replied 34L, he gave it a minute or to for i to settle in, and then the penny dropped...whoops go around, I was still away from the airport and could have forced 34L but made the decision to go around..then in the ensuing conversation with instructor, tower etc i left the power in to long and let the RPM's get way up there..Fixed that with instructors help, calmed down, took a deep breath and entered the pattern and did a normal landing......always always learning something This is the first take off from KVNY, 3-10 take off - YouTube first touch and go at El Monte 3-10 KEMT1 - YouTube now i have to learn how to compress the videos, they take for ever to up load.. any suggestions ??
