    I get it...

((....The Red/Black Split-Window Coupe was purchased new and used as a family car during its early years but was then sold as the owner joined the Army. In 1983 he rediscovered the car in Cincinnati and bought it back. A full restoration was completed and the car was certified at Bloomington Gold. After years of showing the car up and down the East Coast and Midwest, the car was retired from the show circuit and enjoyed by the owners who continued to keep the car in great condition all this time.

For this owner whose first name is Fred, his last drive in the car that means everything to him was at Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale as he and his wife guided the gleaming ’63 split-window onto the auction block.

The couple exited the car and stood along the back wall, and as soon as the bids started coming in, the man breaks down and begins sobbing...)))

A person shouldn't have this much of an attachment to an object. There's something wrong.

It might not be the object itself but the joy and experiences collected through the object.

All of these statements are true at the same time:

    Classic cars are neat
    Classic cars are fun
    Classic cars are a PITA

I disagree, I think for a lot of people this type of cathexis is normal. I get attached to Stuff.

While I do purge things, donate them or sell from time to time, it's emotionally draining for me and I have to be ready for it.

Speaking as a well organized and neat hoarder, I agree.

I'm really good at buying, and have little experience selling things I get attached to. It's one of the reasons my 328 sits in the garage with no more mileage than required to get it to and from its annual inspection.

It's not hard to imagine being a little emotional after all those years of ownership, especially considering his age.

I'd just try to avoid being caught on camera. :)

I had a silver / black 63 split-window coupe a few years back, restored every nut and bolt - all by the book - took about 4 years of my life I'll never get back. It was a wonderful car, drove great, ran great...very solid and reliable too. But I too have to admit...when I sold it...it was hard to see it go. I've always had gasoline in my veins and I know there are other "car guys" out there who get attached to their machinery too. Another car that about killed me to sell was an old 65 Beetle, again...another nuts & bolts restoration, that ran and drove perfect. I actually gave the old bug a hug (misty eyed) before the guy loaded it onto his trailer.

Maybe it wasn't an attachment to the object, but an attachment to all the memories that went along with it - including people and places and times that are now gone.
