    I've had my '98 355 for about 3 weeks now. 80% of the reason I bought it was for the sound. My wife pushed hard for me to get a 360 or 430 but I held out with the belief that there is no other engine on the planet that sounds this good. It came with a Tubi (for sale btw) but after four days of ownership I ordered a Capristo and put on track pipes in my effort to get that screaming F1 sound.

    All is done, car runs great, services have been done and the car is about the cleanest example of a 355 I can imagine and apart from a sticking bypass vavle (solenoid being replaced this week) the car is mechanically perfect, so I can't complain. But, I have to be honest, from inside the car, the sound is not as loud and screamy as I had hoped. The bypass valve is open and it is a Stage 3 I got from Denis at Taurino (they're great btw). So, my question is, will getting rid of the secondary cats open it up much or am I just going deaf LOL?

    Here's a video from today after a drive so you can compare it to other 355's with similar setups. If it matters, it also has Fabspeed headers.

    I can't help with your question as my car is stock Ferrari parts.

    However, I think it sounds fantastic.

    Thanks, maybe I just need to reroute the exhaust in to the cabin of the car so I can actually enjoy it instead of everyone behind me!

    Great looking car, congratulations!

    I spoke to Tony from Capristo Germany a while ago with exactly the same question. He told me it is necessary to install the Y pipe. According to him the Y pipe doesn't yield any benefits, but I can't confirm this off course.
    I will get a Capristo bypass valve and their remote control unit so that I can open the valve when I want to.
    I never heard it scream like an F1 car when I was driving it, but my friends tell me it does from the outside.

    I'll have the same setup once I install my Fabspeed headers and test pipes. It sounds pretty spectacular to me...

    From what I hear deleting the Y-pipe cat doesn't make much of a difference at all.

    He said it IS necessary to install the Y pipe or did you mean it "isn't" necessary?

    Thanks for the compliment, the car is in amazing shape, fewer swirl marks than my daily drivers!

    Nice car and superb choice of exhaust system. Capristo is amazing. I would love to switch my Tubi.

    Not to be a PITA, but I hope you had previously let the car warm-up to normal operating temperatures with a drive before you shot this video. Getting into a "cold" Ferrari and revving it like that is just begging for major problems.

    The scream is missing because you do not have stock headers anymore. The Fabspeed headers are much thicker and muffle the sound more than the stock headers. The stock headers are so thin that they let out that scream but melt because of the same reason... they are so thin.

    I have stock headers and a Capristo and it does scream like crazy. More so than the clip you posted. Unreal sound. Gives me chills just thinking about it right now. I need to do a sound clip to share with everyone.

    Just in case it is important to be sure that when using stock headers that they have no pre cats inside .

    Also keep the oem cats .
    In case any body need we stock the oem euro headers (no precats inside them )

    On the exhaust that you fitted its difficult to hear when one is not present but i think it sounds great .Try driving behind the car when its under load.

    One things for sure is that our 355 exhaust stage 3 is the most sold exhaust item to date .

    Before purchasing our systems call us to discuss exactly what you are expecting so that we can guide you to the right formula on the complete exhaust system .

    One sould be mindfull that an exhaust comprises of headers cats and exhaust.
    Its the combination of the complete components that will give you the finall results .
    Some people like exteme sound others performance .

    Call me before trying the y pipe so that i may guide you in the right direction

    I wasn't aware that the stock headers had pre-cats on a 355. I know the y pipe has pre-cats but don't believe the stock headers have them. Can anyone confirm this???

    I am curious why keep the OEM cats?

    My car is currently awaiting a fabspeed Y pipe. With fabspeed headers and a Capristo 3 exhaust. I tried to keep the OEM secondary cats, but with the change in angle (slight) the secondary cats rubbed the chassis--

    the point is, while just the exhuast may be "plug and play" to the OEM system, if you try to mix and match you should expect to need some modifications for a good fit.

    by the way--your car sounds great--I can't wait to hear mine.

    Shoot the stock headers makes sense. These were on already when I bought it so no point in swapping the at this point. Would love to hear yours though for comparison. I just used my iPhone for this so the quality isn't great but good enough for others to use as a reference. The cats were also failing and since we don't have emissions here in Florida I just had a muffler shop cut the old ones out and insert a piece of straight pipe for $200 rather than $2000 for the Hyperflows.

    As a side note I have been able to fool the ecu with the O2 sensor extenders and steel wool. Without the steel wool they still threw a code but once I added that I have had no problems. Its a 5.2, so yes it can be done even though I had a shop on one of the forums try to sell me a $3k software upgrade because he said it wouldn't work. So far, I'm up $4700 from what I could've paid lol

    Andrea thanks for the input. I'm only concerned with the sound, if I want performance I'll hop in the M3. So far it sounds like its a no go on the y pipe so I just saved another $2k or whatever they are. Ha! My Ferrari is actually saving me money. Im up $6700 so far minus the $4k for the capristo. Lol

    355's do not have any type of Cats in the headers and they have no "pre-cats" at all. You could call them Main and Secondary cats. When the exhaust bypass valve is closed the exhaust goes through the lower/larger cats. When the bypass valve opens some or all of the exhaust gases go through the upper/smaller cats. that are built into the Y-pipe.

    You can make these cars sound more "F1-ish" but you can't make a car that redlines at 8,500 rpm sound just like one that redlines at 18,000 no matter what you do to the exhaust system.

    Your car sound pretty good to me. Unfortunately I think people on the outside of your car get the sweetest sound by far (and the nicest view!).

    With regards to using the stock headers, wouldnt a rebuild from QV London solve the melting issue?

    The Kreissieg Exhaust on the Countach sounds nice, but I still think they sound better on the Ferrari 355 and 360. For the price they better sound amazing...
