I'm hoping to start taking private pilot lessons in the summer. Has anyone recorded their lessons using a GoPro? Would it provide any useful feedback after the flight?

my school and instructors do not allow it, even though i thought it would help me improve/learn, they said in their experience it was detrimental to the student.

That's too bad you can't video the lesson. I think it would be a great tool. Maybe stick the camera on the wingtip, looking at the fuselage. The instructor will never know its there. Of course, having video of the panel and forward view would be awesome.

Ferrari - Tech and I may go to Catalina sometime soon. We'll have to video it!

That's interesting. I did a quick google search before posting this and some schools have integrated systems onboard that record flight data as well.

Hmmmm..... I would love to know their reasons?

That makes sense to me (a clueless outsider btw ;)). Would seem very analogous to replaying data from a track session - Study the telemetry and learn what/why stuff went down.

Maybe they know the benefits would reduce their value? ;)

    Cheers,
    Ian

I'm guessing that it's mostly for legal reasons...

I asked today and was told it was because the student used a hand held devise, even while taxing and doing the run-up and then on his solo as well. His mistake was putting it on youtube so the school owner saw it.

I did ask the school owner (my primary instructor) how he felt about mounting a go-pro or similar in the aircraft and he said they are fine with it as long as they verify the install location and it does not interfere with or distract me from my flying. So everyone get ready for lots of hour long boring videos of me humming around the Sky's of sunny SoCal. :):)

PLEASE be careful where you install your camera if outside the cockpit. I've seen some pretty ingenious places and some very dumb places used as camera mounts.

I always liked this one. It's a little old, so the camera isn't that great, with a lot of shaking. It's from an older 747-200. I think the crew got in trouble for making this video. Can anyone figure out why they may have? The clue is in the video....

Other than being a brilliant film.... not much wrong with that. The only thing i can think of ( and i don't even know if this is possible) it looks like the camera is attached to the nose gear, and they lower the nose gear well before the mains, which I'm sure pissed off some government egg head somewhere..LOU fill us in, there must be procedures for lowering the gear in event of a failure of some kind, one at a time, but all the films i see are of one big lever going up or down....can you even do it one by one ? Am i close ? Do i win the prize ? :)

    Cool video...

Wondering the same thing... nose gear before the mains?

Yeah, that's it. He used the emergency gear extension, choosing just the nose gear. If I remember correctly, an electric motor releases the uplock and the gear gravity falls into position. The nose gear is now stuck in that position. It cannot be raised. Makes for a good video though....
