I am looking for a user friendly not too expensive application to make my own video's / DVD's from my old Super 8 and newer video cameras. I have about 6 hrs of my Honeymoon video that I would like to make a 1 hr DVD.

How much memory / HD space is required? Do I need a special card to input the info into the desktop?

First thing you will need is a video capture card to get the video into your computer.

If your video camera is a DV camera, then chances are you can just get away with a simple firewire card which is cheap.

If you wish to capture from the older hi-8 camera's, VHS, Television, etc.. you will need a Capture Card with an RCA video-in jack. They are bit more expensive.

Most consumer model Capture Cards off the shelf will come with a simple video editing dvd utility like "Ulead DVD studio". Quite easy to use. Drag and drop kinda stuff.

You just need to go and get yourself a video capture card. If your computer is pretty fast, you can get a relatively cheap card and get good results. However, if you have a slow computer, you will need the best card you can get, since the cheaper cards tend to rely on the computer for processing, where as the more expensive models compress and decompress on-board.

Space? For DV quality capture, you will need about 80 gig free for about 1 hour of RAW footage. It then gets compressed by the software and fits on a DVD. Depending on the type of card you buy, the size of file may vary, as they all use different compression methods.

You mentioned super8... The only way to get super8 on to DVD is to send it to a beureu with a telecine or other method that does it. The only other way to get super8 onto video, is to actually project the footage on a screen and use your video camera to capture it.

Sorry I couldnt mention specific models of capture card, I havent been up to speed on them. Hope it helps.

Might I also add, would be cheaper and quicker to just send your footage to a beureu to do it for you. Its not too expensive.

If you then want to edit the video or add titles, you could just do so by editing the DVD itself.
