Whilst my chassis tags have the complete VIN number the chassis stamping on both of my 1980 400i's are a digit short! Both cars have ZFFEB0 C0000 and then the chassis number. The missing digit is the 6 or 7 for auto or manual. Maybe it was left blank until the car was confirmed as an auto or manual but they never got around to stamping it in afterwards when the chassis number was stamped. Just curious to know if anyone else has a VIN stamped like this? My 1982 400i has the full VIN stamped. Cheers, Al
One of my brother former car was "restamped" : the client changed its mind and the car was converted from auto to manual while the car was on the assembly line. The gearbox digit was "corrected". My brother's car had a Classiche certificate so the botched number was "certified" . I guess that in order to avoid the issue the best solution was to stamp the final VIN once the car was completed?
It seems like the chassis number stampings were a bit hit & miss on the 400i's. I have three 400i's and not one is stamped correctly - two have missing digits and one has a 1 stamped where a 0 should be.
