VIN location '78 308 GTS

1- On the plate mounted atop the steering column
2- On the plate mounted on the driver's door sill
3- In the engine bay as indicated here:

Pre-1980 cars do not have the standard 17 digit VIN code hence worthless when doing a Carfax.

Mine is F106AS 26581. The 26581 is the production/chassis number.

 

And the chassis number on the steering column:

As Spasso said, pre-1980 cars have a nonstandard VIN code. For the engine type in my 1976 308 GTB, I have indicated my VIN as F106AB 19399 for the 308 GTB Register and 308GTB19399 as on my vehicle registration.

my 77 has a 76 build date, and '76 emissions placcard, and 1976 federal safety standards placcard. maybe its really a 1976 GTB ?
