My car is listed for sale in FerrariAds. Today I received an email from an interested buyer who asked me to supply him with the full VIN number so he can run a Carfax report.

Is there any reason I should not give him this information? Is it public record and/or can he do me any harm knowing the VIN number?

But I doubt he could do any harm to you by just getting your car's VIN#. He should be asking you for your service records not just your VIN # but that is besides the point. It is a legimate question for a buyer to ask a seller for a VIN # though. He probably just wants to make sure the car doesn't have a salvaged title. Good luck.

the only thing he can really do is use it to try to list the car for sale by himself (eg: standard ebay fraud).

if you think he's a serious buyer, you don't have much choice but to give him the VIN - or he'll walk (i know i would).

My car has had over $10k in work done as a result of an accident. The entire right rear quarter panel was replaced. The repair work was excellent and since the sheet metal was new, the paint reads factory depth all the way around the car. GUESS WHAT, nothing on carfax. It even qualifies for the Carfax buyback guarantee. So have a PPI if you are a buyer.

The VIN is clearly visible and can be read by anyone looking at your parked car. I don't see any harm in "disclosing" the VIN to a prospective buyer. After all, he needs to do his due diligence before buying your car.

You do want to sell it, don't you?
