Almost a year ago I began a thread in the vintage Ferrari thread to share a small cross-section of my old ad archive. I was very pleased with all of the positive responses and contributions from other members.

I was recently asked to create another thread that focuses solely on the Trident Cars. So please enjoy, but turn away if these missed opportunities are too much for you to bear....

(The first 3 batches feature ads that have been already posted in my first thread, and I'm re-posting them here for convenience since they were diffused among ferrari ads which were among others as well.)

This post marks the end of the ads I posted in the other thread, and the new ones are being furnished. Maybe I'll have some ready in a few hours. I'm at home sick so I don't really have anything else to do.

Interesting note about the Zagato coupe that is seen in quite a few of these ads: Supposedly when Sherman first advertised the car in R&T 2/73, he was expecting to ultimately sell it for around $16k, just over 90% his ask of $17500. When the ad was first seen by readers, he was overwhelmed with offers, many of which were over his asking price. The highest offer was just above $25k. Keep in mind that this car, not the Ferrari GTO, was generally considered holy grail of Italian post-war racers at the time.

As a result, he decided to revise his ad, to increase the ask by $5k, to $22,500. The ad was placed in both Hemmings Motor News 3/73, and R&T 5/73. It was still March, weeks before the 5/73 R&T was printed and shipped, when he found a buyer who paid the asking price, supposedly without any haggling. This was contrast to 1970, when the car had no takers at $12,500, and would ultimately sell for $10,000.

Sherman's buyer allegedly would later turn down an offer of $75,000 in 1976, as he claimed it was not for sale at any price. I think the same individual who made the offer settled on a regular 450S which he paid $43,000 for at a Kruse auction in 1978. I can't guarantee that this is the same person, but I do guarantee the prices. The 450S took off in value as well, jumping up to $90k in 1980 and $150k in 1983.

Thank you for posting these. Interesting how markets go up, down, and all around.

I like the A6G for $1,000 USD from `1971, and the Typo 61 for $2,500 USD. Wonderful!!!!

    Ciao and best!

Was able to dig up another one, hidden in a Jaguar classified. Why were these cars so often offered without running gear in the past? What do you think an engine-less 200Si would run today? At that point in early 1976, a nice vintage race-ready 200Si would run about $15k US. Is the 1 to 3 ratio of no engine vs. engine still in effect today?

The 2 cam, double-ignition engines where not easy to maintain in the USA, where the rather simple, but strong V8-motor was the Holy Grail of automotive engineering. Only few specialist could handle the exotic engines from Italy in those days.
The next aspect was when the Italian cars became outdated. So the engine was broken and the US-V8 were cheap - and stronger. So it was logic for some owners to install the V8s into the car.

Currently there is no 200S anymore with a V8.
