These two Dino Service and Parts signs were sold on Ebay USA. I believe they were used as dealership signs in the early-mid 70's, they have a flat face and are about the same size as the metal cased sign in post#1 however they are in a plastic box. They also have "Ferrari" written on them. So far, I think there are 5 lighted signs used in period: 1. Flat metal cased Dino Service (post#1) 2. Flat plastic cased Dino Ferrari Service (this post) 3. Flat plastic cased Dino Ferrari Parts (this post) 4. Raised letters Dino (post#44) 5. Raised letters Dino Service (post#33) The first 3 might be USA only, chronology will take some work however I think #1 was manufactured in 1969-70. Comments welcome. Gentlemen, saw this this morning on E-Bay France; I have no affiliation with the seller, and furthermore doesn't know if it it true vintage or not, but perhaps it might be relevant to your research... Rgds eBay | DINO FERRARI, enseigne OFFICIELLE d'origine, d'époque, de la marque DINO
Continuing from post #51, a slightly different one sold on ebay last week, photos below. The plastic case appears identical, sign is the same manufacturer but combines sales and service... 6. I have always wanted one of these types of signs, but unless I find one I can physically pick up, I won't have one. They are so fragile and the plastic is so brittle, shipping could very well destroy one of these in the blink of an eye. Cool stuff though.
I acquired this sign from someone on the east coast a couple years ago. It was shipped to me in the original (fragile) box it came in from Italy, then crated by UPS. It arrived cross-country w/o any signs of damage. So I think if it's crated, the likelihood of any damage is greatly reduced. Image Unavailable, Please Login
I think I'll wait till OMG Jon makes replica signs again with the raised letters. They looked awfully nice to me. Probably could be made with a more durable plastic. We can't all have original signs. A nice replica is fine by me.
Another sign, type 1 (see post #1,#51) is on ebay now, seems expensive... Original Vintage 1970 Dino Ferrari Electrified Dealership Service Sign | eBay It appears identical but it has a decal on the back: Foreign Motorcars - Sales & Service Chicago, IL - 6-70 This appears to confirm that these were made for USA dealerships when the first Dino's arrived (my L-series was delivered to the first owner via Chinetti in August 1970). There was a neon Dino sign listed on eBay about three weeks ago without the 'Service' script which sold for about USD 1200 or 1300 if I recall correctly - deleted it out of my watch list the other day.
Looked like folk art to me http://www.ebay.com/itm/VINTAGE-1970-RARE-DINO-FERRARI-NEON-DEALERSHIP-GAS-OIL-SIGN-/371279329350
This sign is exactly like my original Dino Service sign. My sign has "PB PRICE BROTHERS" on the back. Price Brothers was a sign manufacturer in Chicago founded by Russian immigrant Louis Price. The company made signs for Sears stores worldwide, and for Budweiser, Hamm's Brewery, Loop Banks, and others. It makes sense that the particular sign listed currently on EBay was displayed by a Chicago, Illinois dealer, Foreign Motorcars, since it was also manufactured in Chicago by Price Brothers. Here is the link to Mr. Price's obituary, with a synopsis of his life, in the January 11, 1999 Chicago Tribune: Louis Price, 100, Advertising Pioneer - tribunedigital-chicagotribune Here is the link to the description and photos of my sign in posts 29 and 32. http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/206-246/390655-vintage-dino-service-sign-2.html Image Unavailable, Please Login
Do you think he was making the light box for dealers or the Ferrari contracted him to make these to be distributed by Ferrari to the dealers?
I'm really not sure. One thing for sure is that Price Brothers had several big international companies, like Sears and Budweiser, that they made signs for. So it's possible they were contracted through Ferrari to make signs. It would be nice if someone could produce a contract, a memo, or letter from Ferrari or Price Brothers that would enlighten us to the truth. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
