excellent thread. perhaps you can clear coat the plate to seal it, and protect the finish and the sticker? Duracoat comes in a clear finish and the stuff is darn near bulletproof!
You could have a rubber stamp of the round sticker made and use white paint. It would not cost that much. I thought of this because I just stamped my Marelli resistors that go on the coils using paint and it worked out great..
My wife and I visited the Barber Motorsports museum yesterday with one of the things we wanted to see was any old Italian bike plates. Sure enough, the ones we saw seemed to be hand painted and the Italian star was stamped in the plate and looked hand painted. Are there any other suppliers of these plates that get the details closer to original?
yes i used them for the 70's A4 type size destined for the rear of a Dino. Nice quality stamped aluminum and per another forum i think they can emboss the Italian symbol as typical for that era. Image Unavailable, Please Login
What I can point out is that in Italy the license plates of that era were made up of max 8 characters, with a combination of 2 letters stating the province (excluding K-J-Y-X-W) and up to 6 numbers.
0454 appears to have had a temporary tag taped to it for a few of its earliest races. Is there any way to determine if it had a permanent tag issued and what that number might have been? I’m interested in getting a reproduction made to mimic the original Italian tags. If I can’t determine a permanent/different number I’ll just go with the Bologna temp letters and numbers. Thanks in advance for any assistance you guys in the know can provide! Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
0454 MD was not fully registered with proper plates in Italy. Used on temporary cardboard plates only (usually issued in Bologna). Below are samples (of other Ferraris). Marcel Massini Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Bo-plates used by Ferrari were issued in Modena. Bo stands for Bologna, the capital of the railroad district. System chaged in 1959 and "L4" was now allocated for Modena. "Bo 43277" as used on 0696MDTR must be a fake or fantasy.
I never said "BO 43277" was used on 0696 MDTR. Here's a pic of 0696 MDTR. Marcel Massini Image Unavailable, Please Login
Here are some nice period plates. Marcel Massini Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
The plate Bo 43277 is a modern fake. It reports the wording: model M.C. 849 which is the one for motorcycles. The motor vehicles have the model 848 as the 46871 L4 rightly has. (M.C.= Motorizzazione Civile/Civil Motorization)
