Saw an article on Apollo 1, and remembered. 45 years ago today. RIP, gentlemen.

This is actually a week of solemn remembrances: Challenger was lost on January 28, and Columbia on February 1.

Several years ago my wife and I went to Florida to visit her Great Uncle and he told us about losing his good friend Ed White in that fire.

He worked for David Clark, the company that made those suits the astronauts wore and he said the fire never breached those suits but did burn through the oxygen hoses connected to them and they all died of smoke inhalation. A sad, sad day.

I find it humbling to think they gave their lives in the advancement of our knowledge of the solar system. I always say a prayer for those lost when I visit Kennedy.

Curious that the three major disasters for US space flight occured within one week of the calendar.
