Last week I was in Maui. I went on a tour around the island. One of the stops is a small church on the North east side of the island. It's pretty far off the beaten path and on the road to Hana.

In the back of that church is a small cemetery. In the middle is a grave of one of my heroes, Charles Lindbergh. I took a picture of the marker which is about a meter wide. Someone had placed the flowers there before I arrived.

I always wondered about his resting place. Looking at the surroundings, I can see why he wanted to be there.

I've been there too, it's quite off the beaten path. I can imagine what the trip was like when he was still alive. You can tell he really wanted out of the limelight after his sons death.

    It's definately a beautiful area.

Wow! That's really cool Bob! So glad you had such a nice trip to Maui - your
first time in Hawaii!! I go there 3 times a year the last 8 years, but only to
Oahu on business and HATE IT. I hope to make some time for Maui one of
these days, and get to relax and get out of the traffic and insanity.

Lindberg had a tough time politically on the run up to WWII. I would expect that that too played a part on his reclusiveness.

Finding that cemetary and the grave site took us several attempts; they don't want to make it too easy to find.

There was that, plus he very likely knowingly sent an innocent man (Bruno Hauptman) to his death.
I grew up about 5 miles from the home in Hopewell NJ where his baby was "abducted", and argued in a mock trial competition in the same Flemington NJ courthouse where the "trial of the Century" took place.
Other than his admittedly very brave famous flight, curious why you consider him a hero Bob?
Glad you had a good trip!

I went there with my dad about 10 years ago; it is definitely off the beaten path. I don't think the rental car agency would have approved of that trip

but, it's a beautiful setting. the little church next to the cemetery was really cool too.

I wouldn't consider him a hero, but being from St. Louis, and having driven hundreds of miles on a street named for him, and having a father who worked in aerospace, it was a special trip.

To me, Lindbergh did one of the most amazing feats in the history of aviation. I've seen the Spirit of St Louis and I still can't believe anyone even thought they could do it. To get in that plane and know that there's a very good chance you're going to die yet go and do it anyway... remarkable.

For the guy who put American Aviation on the world stage -- he's my hero.

Fair enough, no doubt he had a huge set.
Just a bit too cozy with the Nazis and manipulative of the legal system for my tastes.

That must be a sight to behold. I just finished reading his biography and it is a fascinating read. Lots of insight into the man behind the myth, so to speak.

I never realized until recently that he was laid to rest in Hawaii.
