Hi all--I just committed to attending the '05 GP; so far I've only arranged race tickets, plus accommodations for 3 March to 7 March. I'm planning on coming before the race &/or staying a while after the race, probably spending ten days to two weeks in-country. I've spent time in Sydney, Brisbane, & the Gold Coast on a previous trip, so I'm thinking of staying down south this trip. I'm late-fifties, and will be traveling alone (unless I get lucky :) ). I enjoy traveling by train, so have thought of visiting Adelaide that way. Might even go all the way to Perth, time permitting. Also am considering visiting Tasmania. I'd appreciate any input and suggestions you might have for a Yank tourist.

    Regards & TIA,

    dn

    Hi David

If you're here the weekend before the GP (26-7 Feb) and you are into Historic Racing, the best meeting of the year is held at the Philip Island circuit, not far from Melbourne.
Tasmania is a bit like England (quaint) but the locals all have 2 heads - it's the inbreeding you know :)
Adelaide's nice if you're into churches, wine and food.
Don't come to Perth, it's crap. And besides that, we don't need any more visitors. ;)
Suggest travelling by air - you'll waste too much time by train.
    Enjoy your visit.

tasmania has just as many ugly people as anywhere else, however, conspicuously absent are the people who are easy on the eyes. get used to walking around looking at the ground. :(

the scenery is beautiful though. spend a few days driving the countryside.

    well, i like 2 outta 3. :)

yes, perth blows. but if you're there, go get a steak at Fibber McGees in Leederville. omigodsoawesome.

yes. unless you're a train geek, ferget it. i did the trip from perth to adelaide, and it sucks ass. of course i was in coach and yuk, never again. 2 days of sitting and sleeping uncomfortably with no scenery whatsoever. (nullabor = no trees)

As someone already mentioned Phillip Island Historics are the weekend before GP but the Auto Italia (big gathering of all Italian marques, cars and bikes nicely located by the lake) is in Canberra the following weekend. Maybe someone from Melb is driving up and needs a passenger. Take the long way over the Alps - its a great trip (I did it last year in my 308). Linking these 3 events makes a really nice motoring holiday! Also if in Victoria you should drive the Ocean Road along the coast - really spectacular (like the good bits of US highway 101 between Monterey and LA). Maybe someone from Vic can comment on whether there's a F-car hire place down there?

Tassie is only for nature lovers (for which it is superb), 'cities' are more like sleepy villages! However the best value 'tourist' jaunt in the world is in Hobart - the local marine historic association built a Tall Ship for some anniversary and do trips around the harbour on a Sat arvo for something ridiculously cheap like $5! On a nice day, it is just awesome, especially as all the volunteers obviously feel for their ship like we feel for our cars.
