My MIL is celebrating her 50th and wants to go to Nashville, so there is about 10 of us going.

I've been once years ago, but was really just an overnight stop on a drive cross-country. I'm sure there is a ton to do, but what are the best things to check out that time of year? Also, my wife and I are huge history buffs. I plan on going out to Lynchburg to tour the Jack Daniels distillery. Is that any good?

Nashville has a ton to do. Foodie heaven, live music downtown almost for free, nothing like it anywhere. New F dealership. See the Ryman. Walk through Vanderbilt campus. See the Parthenon replica.

Jack Daniels is a good distillery tour and well worth the trip. It's very busy so it is best to get tickets before your visit. Mary Bobo's is a well-known restaurant in Lynchburg that offers good Southern food in a neat old house. You'll need reservations. Other area distilleries include Pritchards (rum), Southern Pride (whiskey/shine), Big Machine Distillery (whiskey), Cascade Hollow/George Dickel (whiskey), and Liepers Fork Distillery (whiskey).

A good historical place to visit is the site of the Civil War Battle of Franklin about 30 minutes south of Nashville. They offer an informative/interesting tour and the site has a period original building which apparently has the most bullet holes of any Civil War era building still standing. It's not an expansive battlefield site like Gettysburg, Shiloh, or Chickamauga so it is a fairly quick visit.

I second the Opryland Hotel recommendation.....it's impressive.

Not much to add but avoid the Kimpton hotel there. Usually a very reliable hotel brand, we were very very underwhelmed. Thompson is another option
