Did the early 308's come from the factory with the California decal still in place on the top edge of the Vitaloni mirrors, any ideas? Thanks, Mike
I'm at work now, but I'll check tonight in a book I have, Original Ferrai V8 and let you know if nobody answers by then.
thanks Sindo would appreciate that. Now I'm looking into the mirrors (excuse the pun) judging from the pictures on the sales brochure I have it might be the case that the 308 only came with one mirror on the drivers door, perhaps the other mirror was an option?
Mike Early 308's came from the factory with only the drivers side Vitaloni California installed(either LHD or RHD)....Other side was dealer fitted extra....and yes decal(s) was on mirror. Kim
thanks Kim, what I suspected! Reason I asked was I have one mirror with and one with out, so now I'll get my decal man to make a copy!
The other reason I asked was this picture I came across. How cool to know that Ferrari were using the same mirror on their F1 cars as on the road cars that year. Here's Niki Lauda in his 1976 312 T2, the car from that years infamous head to head with James Hunt as featured in the film 'Rush', the same mirror as on the 1976 308, complete with decal! That is cool. And yes, according to the sales brochure, only one mirror (with sticker). Now, the question is, which way should the sticker be facing. Ive seen it done both ways. Anyone know the factory correct way? Should we assume this F1 photo is the correct way? I would think naturally it should be the other way, but as with most stuff Ferrari and 70s it was probably the opposite of what is considered logical today.
Spot on Mike. The California mirrors were used on the F1 cars and are still being used widely in all forms of Motorsport today! Sounds like you are preparing your 308 for concourse? I have quite a few hard to find items for 308 Vetroresina 's if you are searching for anything, feel free to ask. Cheers, Kim
Hi Steven, thanks for that but any chance of a link, can't find them on the UK site? That's the plan Kim, the car was entered and won it's class in the UK Ferrari Concours in 1989, so if I enter next year it will be 25 years on! Pretty much there in terms of what I need, although could do with checking through the tool kit, is there a definitive thread anywhere on what are the correct pieces?
This question comes up a lot. I have a fairly original '78 308 and it has only one mirror with the Vitaloni Californian decal.

According to Niki Lauda F1 pic it should face you when you look at it from the front of the car. I think I put mine the other way. :-(
Lucky enough I placed them on the proper way. I didn't remember I had a picture of them. Image Unavailable, Please Login
My passenger side was added. From the factory there is a small steel plate held in place to the door by a screw in the center of it with 2 threaded holes on each end for the Mirror(3 holes in the door). My passenger door Mirror was only held with metal screws directly in the door sheetmetal(2 holes).
it does look the wrong way round like that, but as you say the same as the Lauda F1 pic! Interesting to see the metal version down under Carl, thanks.
They also use those mirrors on the Lancia Montecarlo/Scorpion You can also buy them here: Lancia Montecarlo Exterior trim: Mirrors: S1 Vitaloni Mirror - LH Image Unavailable, Please Login
Saw this today and thought I'd take a pic or two for your thread. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Mirrors were on both sides.
Hmmm. I like originality, but I like clean lines more. No decals for me. That pic of Lauda is awesome.

Okay. I'm reviving this thread from the dead. Before doing so, I looked around and decided this thread had the best info on the California mirror and because it addresses placement, stickers, and other cool historical tid bits, I thought putting some refurbishment pics in this thread would make it a decent reference. First few pics are the mirror I bought off fleabay untouched. As some may know, my Koenig is getting de-Koenigified and to do this, I needed a real vintage Californian. I selected this mirror because I believed it to be original as the style of the base is slightly different than the new ones that are all over the place. Image Unavailable, Please Login
