Fascinating article in Road and Track. Jano came from Fiat to Alfa circa 1925.. Reputed one of the best engine designer of his time...ie 1925 to 1999!!!! Look it up. If I can link it I will.

Never heard of him, but all internet sources say he died in 1965. Suicide after death of his son.

Sorry... Progressively used through the Dino v8, the 288 and the 360. I did not know of his time of death.. Intriguing though. I'll get the article for the thread.

I confess it's based on limited sources but there is credibility to the theme that Jano was a master designer and that MY 360 V8 has his DNA. Tell me what you know, I'm not being sarcastic. This is a great way to learn about our cars.

Jano designed the Lancia D50 v8 and also the Dino 206/246 engine, with supposedly some help from Enzo's son, Alfredo.

    Lampredi designed the 308 v8 didn't he?

Unbelievable! Greatest automotive designer of all time.

Designed all the great 30's Alfa Romeo's including the Grand Prix P3. Also designed the Lancia Aurelia and their race cars ...

    A true genius.

Walt- You really have to do some research on Ferrari engines to understand what I am talking about. What you said is kind of like saying Colombo was responsible for the F12 engine. The original Colombo engine was a 1.5 liter, 60 degree, SOHC V12 with three head studs per cylinder, mousetrap springs, and no valve seals. He left soon after designing that engine. To say Colombo's V12 evolved into today's 65 degree F12 engine is true, but there were a lot of steps in between, including the Lampredi V12s, such that the current engine bears little resemblance to the original.

The Modena V8, with 5 valves per cylinder, belt drive for the cams, hydraulic lifters, coil on plug ignition, and timed port injection is so far removed from the engines Jano designed that, like Colombo, the heritage is very distant.

I have some familiarity with Jano, Lampredi, and Colombo engines including the D50, Lancia Aurellia and the prewar Alfa motors. Have worked on all but the D50.

The 360 motor is not the work of Jano. As I said in another thread about another engine family just today it is a very romantic notion and many want to believe but the similarities stop with the use of aluminum and they were both piston engines.

They should leave history to the historians.

The basic architecture could not be produced in the time of Jano.

Visionaries have ideas. Robert Fulton penned the Wankle engine, Da Vinci penned the Reynolds chain, the parachute and the helicopter. Neither are considered the inventors of those. They had no ability to carry out their ideas for one.

I appreciate the education... I did react romantically to the word written in the Road and Track Mag.
Do I also have to abandon the belief that the V12 in my 275GTB was not the product of Colombo's hand?

The original Colombo was the genesis of it, no question but it did get some improvements along the way.

Not in the way of argument but maybe a bit of face saving over my exaggerated thread title?

Wikipedia: Jano's contribution to Ferrari was significant. With the encouragement of Enzo's son,*Dino, Jano's*V6*and*V8*engines pushed the olderLampredi*and*Colombo*engines aside in racing. After Dino's death, Jano's "Dino" V6 became the basis for the company's first*mid-engined*road car, the 1966*206 Dino.[2]*The V6 and V8 went on to displace Ferrari's*V12focus and their descendants continue to be used today.
