Thank you for the pictures Paul, that is exactly what expected. At first we were thinking about adapting the surround, but all pictures i have seen so far confirm that Maserati just used something off the shelf and tacked it onto the boot. Will go that way too....

    Hi,

Confirming you both have the same license plate surround as is on my car (and that should be original). I just took a picture in my garage before seeing Surveyor already replied so i'll post it anyway.

To the next Mexico owner thinking about sourcing one of these from a Lancia/Alfa/Ferrari parts specialist: they are NOT the same. They just look very similar. Width and curvature vary. Of course, i had to find out the hard way, by buying what i was sure were NOS Mexico frames.

While i'm sure they must have NOT been designed for a Mexico, all Mexico's have the same non-fitting frame and i've not been able to find out what other car they were also used on.

Perhaps these are all just from a 'failed' batch of Lancia frames?? :)

Since the numberplate frame is the original one, i have everything together to send away for rechroming. Wish me luck that everything comes back and the chrome is good.....

Hi Lbird. I notice you have split your seat hinges for re-chroming. Did you have to
Grind off the end of the main spindle to do so? I could not see another way to do mine.
If so, how are you going to re-assemble? Tap the spindle shaft and use a spacer shim and bolt??
They were obviously never made to undergo this process!
BTW did you win the bet with your engine builder??

    All the best.

    Mark.

Hi Mark, the seat hinges were dismantled as you described it. There was no other way, to rechrome it attached to each other won't work properly. We are going to try to carefully weld it together after i get the parts back. We will see if it works.
And i won the bet with my engine man, of course there were a lot of ltttle things which were not there on time.... :)

    Hi Guys.
I have just bought Mexico 256 - just a body shell . I have a terminal QP1 to use as a donor car so I have a lot of the mechanicals but there are a TON of Mexico only parts to locate . Can anyone assist me with leads ? . Bigger items like Bonnet , Doors and Boot lid in any condition ( patterns ?) , but also Chrome bits , Rear seat , bumpers , the list goes on and on.
I promise to post pictures of the project once it arrives here. I am working up a list of needs but its extensive so HELP would be greatly appreciated ( parts even more so !)

A little addendum: Please forget my question about that part number 48, this seems to be a QP1 part and won't end up on my engine, so at least that case is closed....

It takes a brave man to build a Mexico from just a body shell! Respect and welcome to Steve!

We're already emailing directly about his missing body/interior parts. (Merci Charles @ Mexico Registry)

A little question about some detail of the trunk: I am planning to put some sound deadening fleece like material in the trunk area where the fuel pumps, the battery and the spare wheel are sitting. I have seen that on a couple of cars already. And don't get me wrong, i am talking about the area underneath the wooden cover, on top of that is a plain black carpet.

Can somebody tell me what is original and where exactly that fleece material sits? I have attached a picture of Pauls trunk and another one (i think from Mike) where you can see the area i am talking about. I am a little bit unsure about this because i have seen all kinds of finishes in this area and i am not sure what is authentic.

    Hi lbird,

Posting photos of the original stuff.

It is glued onto the trunk. It's a fabric that doesn't seem to have a front or rear side. It's about 3mm thick. Feels like synthetic stuff.

I have not seen any parts suppliers offer this kind of material. If anyone has ever seen it somewhere, please speak up.

Hello lbird... Are you sure you want to put sound deadening material in the trunk area.
I say this as it is kind of nice to hear the ticking of the fuel pumps when the key is turned.
The ticking lets you know there is a very high probability of fuel going to the carbs.. Sound deadening the trunk might not let you hear the ticking... But, in the end, it
probably doesn't matter. If the car won't start or dies while running, one of the first
things to check are the pumps...

Thank you Bart for the confirmation that some kind of felt or synthetic fabric is covering the trunk. Will use my stuff then properly.

And now a drumroll please: Engine ran for the first time yesterday. Fired up immediately on all cylinders and ran after some ignition adjustment for half an hour without a hitch. No water or oil leaks visible, good idling and oil pressure, gorgeous sound. Love it like a kid in a candy store! Now only the valve covers and manifold will have to be painted and then it is ready for installation....

Some more pictures as usual because i really adore the look of these V8 beasts.

It is always a good feeling when an engine starts up for the first time. Congratulations!
May I suggest that since you did not wrinkle paint the heads, before assembly, that you simply leave the cam covers as they are. It will give it that 450S look.
Just my 2 lira of course.

    Hello lbird..

Congratulations on the engine running !!! That is a big moment !!! In looking at your
pictures, I don't see the carbs set up for cold starting with the choke.. What are you
planning on doing about this?.. I see where one of your cam covers has the holes for
the rod which would have individual wires leading to each carbs pump assembly, as seen
in your last picture. I am interested in this as mine was not set up either...

    Thanks...

    Mike

Interesting that the heads were designed and cast for twin spark plugs per cylinder.

    Oh and well done :)

@Frank: I will only paint the valve covers with black wrinkle paint, everything else will stay as is. But i really like the look of black valve covers...
@Mike: I probably don't attach a choke at all. I have two other cars with Webers, i operate both of them without the choke. Pump the pedal three times and they fire every time without problems.

    Hello lbird...

I understand... As I indicated, my Mexico didn't have this set up either.. Also on my
Mexico, the valve cover that has the holes for the choke rod was replaced with one that
doesn't.. Looks a bit cleaner, in my opinion...

Keep the pictures and updates coming!

    Nice work, Olaf + Sigi!

It is hard to tell from pics: Exhaust pipe No. 7 looks a bit less heated compared to the rest. Please check the candle no7 for right color, cyl. 7 might be running too rich. or leave it up to the fine tuning when the engine is in place ...

    Greetings from Berlin
    Marek

    BTW
    What ignition is assembled?
