Quick question to those in the know about this stuff... I have 5 stores running a Windows XP based POS system - a network of 5-8 PC's at each location. All behind an router connected to net via DSL. Right now I connect to each store using RDP to do "things". That is a pain sometimes as I get kicked off because people are using the system, etc. I'm thinking of doing some sort of VPN, so I can access files "directly" from my PC. I've never looked into this before - so I thought I'd save a little time and ask for some direction here. Keep in mind I did mainframe systems programming for 15 years - so while I know nothing about VPN, I'll "get it" pretty quick.. So, suggestions on a way to set this up? I'm looking for cheap... Thanks!
I dunno much about VPN... but from what I understand, they are very bandwidth intensive applications... and your DSL just may not be enough to run it reliably in addition to the other services your computers are running as well...
Nah! There's a little overhead to set up the "tunnel" (key setup & negotiation), and then a little to encrypt the traffic, but that's not using bandwidth - If it works "in the clear", it'll work via a VPN. [As long as your 'puters aren't already completely pegged, which I doubt.] Good luck, cheers, Ian
oh. Well, maybe it has more to do with my GF's VPN to her work, because it pretty much destroy's our DSL connection while she has to log in to do some stuff...
Best to dedicate a machine at each location to your remote access unless you are working while the stores are closed or the employees have no need to be on the pc as opposed to the POS terminals.
