So I have a question about wait lists for F cars?? My local Ferrari dealer has recently sold and got back 2 different F430's. Each one had a few hundred miles more than when they were sold and they were back on the market a few months later? Just coincidence or am I missing something? Which is it....

1)Are people buying and taking hits to get on a order wait list?

2)Buyers get bored and switch models?

3)Dealer buys back from a hidden problem?

4)Just random that 2 f430's followed same path with short miles and ownership duration of just a few months?

Not really missing anything...those guys where probably told "hey if you want to oder a 458 buy a 430 first and then we can talk"

I bought a 430 from my dealer and still cant get on the 458 or 458 Spider list. It was a recent purchase, I told them I wanted a 458 before I bought the 430. So your theory is busted at my south FL dealer.

    5) More likely it was someone that wanted a 458, and got the 430 to hold them over until they received their allotment.

    So my vote is for:
    #1 or #5

Or maybe they just did not like the F430. You know it is possible, however unlikely.

1 and 2. People buy a used car to get higher on the mythical list and also to pleasure themselves during the wait. Yes, they get bored and want the latest and greatest.

    3- No.

4- No. It's been going on since the 360 introduction and the long waiting lists associated with it (and people paying massively over MSRP for one). It's not random. It's by design.

It's all by territory and allocation. In some areas, the lists are way longer than others.

    Thanks for your thoughts guys.

Im leaning towards guys buying and selling F430's to get a spot on the wait list. Im sure these guys are taking hits of 10-20k. For me I will enjoy my f430 till the 458's drop 100 grand. Who knows when this will happen? In the meantime I will enjoy my 08 f430...

I will never understand guys paying over msrp to get a car but that is a entirely different conversation...

Supply and demand -- supply and demand. If there was not high demand, none of this would exist.

The best customers get first pick. Want a car earlier? Become a good customer.

If you're a frequent flyer on an airline, do you expect to get a free upgrade before someone who never flew that airline before? Would you be upset if a first time buyer got the upgrade before you -- the loyal customer?

    Is that unfair too?

Is it unfair that cars like the Enzo are sold out before anyone even knows they are on the market? Ferrari goes to their best customers and offer it to them first. If you were a loyal customer, would you like it if some first time buyer got one ahead of you? What's the point of being a good customer then? Why not take your business elsewhere?

    Same thing.

Wow, you and I are neighbors. I'm in Leesburg as well, but took it off my profile a while back.

You'll get value from the hobby you're proposing. Something to be said for owning a lot of different cars. Fun stuff. I'm only half a year into my 430, LOVE IT, truly, and already looking for the next ride. Silly, I know. But it's simply pay to play. So many cars; so little time. Just got my hip replaced, at 44 no less, and HAD TO have a spider prior. Now that I can enjoy a coupe, I'm actually really getting gaga over 599's. 430 coupes are gorgeous as well, but would like to experience a front engine 600+ HP beast with an actual interior. 430 interior is okay, minimalist. My wife would like the 599.

    Piper,

Yes, I have seen you drivin around in Leesburg, hard to miss your gorgeous spider!

I like to attend the C&C events though I have been busy so I have not been in a long time...

Sounds like you are a car nut just like me. I have had the priveledge to own many exotics so I understand your itch for something new. I usually get a new sports car every year except my last car, a 997 turbo coupe that I kept for 3 years. I dreamed of owning a F430 the entire time I had my 997 turbo but could not justify the price of admission around MSRP. I had a goal to get my first ferrari at 35, well I did it a year early, I'm 34. I searched, searched and searched and found the perfect car for me at Algar in PA. (FOW did not have the car to fit the criteria). I would have like to start a relationship with FOW but the Algar guys are top notch!

2008 F430 F1 3565 mile corsa red/tan/black carpets, 2 owner car , red stitching, shields, daytona seats, carbon driving zone, carbon rear segment--was a must have in my search, I love this option), hi fi sound, carbon ceramic brakes (standard), leather rear shelf, leather headliner, yellow tach

I am pleased with my car but have already been eyeballing 599's and scuderias :), though I will probably enjoy my car until I can get the Italia!

My goal is to get the 458 in a few years but I will wait till they get to a more realistic price for me. I could never buy a $300,000 car, too much dough for me...

Anyhow back the the thread subject, I was curious the requirments to get on a wait list. With FOW getting f430's back after just a few hundred miles I figured that was the ticket to get on a wait list. The question is how much are these guys taking a hit for, probably 10-20k, just crazy if you ask me. I will just wait till the 458 depreciates 100 grand, in the meantime I have a wonderful car that blows my mind every time I take her out.

Im sure we will cross paths at a C&C event soon

We have the once a month cars and coffee in Lanswdowne this saturday, first saturday of every month. Come on out. Would love to see your 430. As for the wait list, I'm assuming you need to establish a rapport with one dealer over time, and doubt there's any correct answer, exactly number of transactions, value of metal purchased, etc. I got on the list, and my guess is it's simply my charming personality, as I'm only on my second car and haven't bought several California's over list nor sacraficed my first born child :) Who knows. But you might have been better off if that were your goal letting Franklyn or Jonathan at FOW work on getting you the car you wanted so you could get a start there. Otherwise, I guess keep trading with Algar and see where it gets you. But if you can't drop in and shoot the **** over a cup of coffee once in a while, kinda hard to get that warm fuzzy going. I stop in there regularly because I love chatting with the guys and looking at the cars. It's fun, club like, sorta. I guess it used to be more that way under prior ownership, used to have F1 race day gatherings and such. Still, really great bunch of guys. Everyone at FOW is cool.

That doesn't really seem fair to me either. Honestly, I'd give it to you, if I could. Seriously, if it mattered that much to someone, I don't exactly feel like I earned something or deserve something. I think they just, as Bob said, had allocation and I happened to ask at the right time.

    Piper,

Like you mentioned in previous posts you purchased a F car from the local dealer and you have established a relationship with them, so they threw you a bone on a order allocation! I'm sure their is certain 'in house' requirements but your charm helped and commitment to the dealer and brand. I have always learned you can ask for anything, the worst someone can say is NO :). I dont think is was just your luck, they want you to have that new car. Congrats on your allocation spot, I would love to see a 458 spider running around Leesburg!

That being said how would you or did you spec the new build? Is their any options your current spider does not have that you wish it did? How is the stereo in the 458? I saw in other posts you redid the tunes and improved the sound 100% in your current spider.

Or are you leaning towards a 599? So many spectacular choices coming out of Maranello :)

I'm completely happy with my current spider. I just only have one garage space to use for my toys and want to experience more. Frankly, I'm assuming I'll be able to handle the car when my number comes up, and they know it. The way busienss is heading, would appear to be the case. But you never know. As for the 599, I expect I have a couple or three years before I even get to option my 458 spider, and that's a long time for me to be in a car, as in never. Very good chance I'll do something in between the 430 and the 458, and could be a 599.

I do understand but you are still being ripped off. :)

The waiting list here in Europe for a 458 is probably pretty long (+1,5-2 years, correct me if I'm wrong) but if I had the funds I could get a new one or one with less than 100 miles in 2 days time without having to buy a F430 or any other car.

Pre-owned? No problem. You can get one tomorrow. Want to order a new one custom made? Wait. How long you wait depends on how many are ahead of you and the dealer's allocation. It's pretty simple and it's not unique to cars. Anything that is in short supply and high demand will have similar issues.

    It's called free enterprise.
