onboost is as cheap as me. No WAY he'd pay premium pricing! :D Here's a pic of our two cars sitting together in the cheap seats and not allowed near the red ones.

I'm in Annapolis. I have had the car for about 2 1/2 years. Can you post a picture of yours?

On a related topic - since someone brought up the relative rarity of colors is there a way (other than the online registries) to find out how many of any particular color were made? Specifically, I am curious about the Nero Metallico 308s (just bought one - :) )

Through the registries I found one more Nero Metallico/Crema 308 - a twin to mine (on sale on Ebay right now btw) and thats it....found another one with a slightly different interior, but curious about how many others may actually be out there.

The Chiaro Oro was mine until about four years ago. I traded it in for my black one. It was a great running car but had a lot of cosmetic issues. While the paint looked ok from a distance, it was apparent upon closer inspection that it was in need of a complete re-spray. I always liked the color but couldn't warm up to the brown interior. The leather was also very hard and cracked.

That's all good to know. When the time comes to hunt it down, it will be interesting to see what happens. I'd be willing to pay a premium vs red, but no way is a -seller- going to know that. :)

So many of these oddballs are quite literally unique in the world.

It still blows my mind that those two cars shared a parking lot.

I dont think red is as popular now as it was 10 plus years ago on a Ferrari. Based on what I see out there, greys blacks and yellows seem to be dominating the exotic new car market. I would go out on a limb here and say that less than 50% of new ferrari's are painted in red. I personally dont care for red and love the grey and silver cars especially with the red interiors-that would be worth a (small) premium to me.

I actually used the color against dealer to work the price down. The car sat on their lot for a while before I bought it.

Ah, someone with -very good- taste :)

Prugna was the replacement color for Rosso Rubino. Phased in during the 308QV run.

I'd had a '79 308GTB, Rubino, decided to buy a 328GTB, told the dealer to dial me in
with Rubino, but to no avail...he ordered me something that was 'close'.

'bout fell over when I went to the dealer to pick it up, was quite a shock.
No web/email in those days, never saw any paint samples, just ordered it.

However, worked out really well, is my favorite color(some blues ~equal, tho :) )

I think you're right. Although the newer cars are much larger, so while I wouldn't choose red for a 360/F430/599/612 I still think it looks OK on the 246/308/328/348/355. Not the absolute best color, but Ferrari used to be so low-slung and small that the red wasn't overpowering.

Also I agree that red interior may be more popular now (in the States) than they were in the '80s. I initially passed on a black/red 308 a few years back because I though the red leather and carpets were too intense. Now, I've kind of warmed up to it.

    carguy246..
I had to do a double take when I saw your car.. it looks very close to mine prior to the addition of the Euro front spoiler. We'll have to hook-up sometime.. PM me your email address.

Records indicate the fog lights on my car were ordered by the original owner, I assume they were installed by/at the dealer since they are Bosch, rather than Carello or Cibie. The mounts however may be factory item based on fitment.

Scuderia NoVA; Yeah we've had some interesting times with these cars.. we'll have to get together before the summers done. Get RP to join us.. if he'll keep that "Red Wow" at a pace where we can keep up!! :)

Here are a couple more pics..

Having owned several red sports cars in the past, when I decided to go looking for a 308 I knew I wanted something different in color.
I had previously owned a red/blk Mondial cab, and had a Argento/blk Mondial cab which I was giving up for the 308.. in my opinion, the Argento was the prettier of the two.. I think it made the lines flow better.

I looked at a Verde/tobacco QV in CA and really wanted it but didn't move fast enough.. then of course I couldn't find one. I also considered a couple of Prugna QV cars, one with Tan, the other with Crema, but both cars seemed to have more issues than I was willing to deal with for the price. Then a friend called, said he was buying a Testarossa from a guy that also had a 308 that he thought I'd like because it was well maintained and an odd Ferrari color. The PO was trading in both cars for a new 430. Boy did we get into the middle of that deal! Both the 308 and it's big brother TR now reside in MD.

O.K., as a gift for Gus, another pic of his first 328. This is one of Chris's photo shoot, so I'm not sure how F-Chat's pixal reduction routine will effect it. My hi-def pics seem to have come through in the past without too much degredation. Just ignore the old, ugly guy in the photo. He's superfluous, but the car looks great.

Absolutely right - it's the reason that red has always been popular on sport-sized cars but never on sedans. Red is overpowering on a larger vehicle. But on a car of the 3x8 size, as the old saying goes, "It just WORKS!" To me the other colors are too subdued and just don't pack any "punch" on these cars. But as has often been said, most notably by James T. Kirk, "There's no accounting for taste."

I was just looking at a red BMW that I was going to buy, and I agree with you--it is somewhat overpowering. Now I'm thinking, "fire truck"... :(

My first 308 was Rosso Dino I didn't really appreciate it until I got a boring resale red 308. When you see it by it self it looks red but put it in the middle of a group of red Ferraris at a Ferrari gathering and it really stands out. Go to Google images and search on Rosso Dino and you will see a number of Ferraris in this color (and a few pictures of a male porn star named Dino Rosso) There is even an Enzo in Rosso Dino.

Seconded. When I was looking for 308's my preference in color was something like 1) silver/grigio over red 2) blue over tan 3) red 4)black/white/yellow, but I ended up buying red over tan.

Spent about an hour cleaning my red QV on Saturday, and the more I look at it the more 'right' it seems. Hand polishing the side scoops is an almost carnal pleasure...

ahem, anyway if I'm ever lucky enough to own more than one Ferrari maybe it'll be another color, but to me the ubiquitous, common ol' resale red is absolutely the best color.

By the way, not to thread jack but does anybody have any photos of red 308s with non brown or black carpets?
Looking to replace the rather dull brown/tan ones in mine at some point and seem to remember seeing a pic of one with red carpets/tan seats that looked pretty sharp.

    cheers
    Kurt
