A friend asked me to post this. He is running a essay contest to give his car to the person who writes the best essay about why they deserve his car. Check it out.

Link deleted since he's asking $125 an entry to enter the essay contest. Here's the content:

It's an interesting way to sell a car, but 1) too many conditions (minimum entry, etc), 2) no assurance the winner will be selected fairly (car won't go to a buddy), 3) the money will be returned, or 4) the car will be given away at all.

Why an essay ? Should have just asked 3/4 questions on Mercedes History with a fee and give the car away after X entries are registered..Its not like they are going to read the essays anyway..

Sounds like the old donkey scam {<<< new name}. Why not ban him for potential fraud?

    Old Donkey Scam

A city boy moved to the country and bought a donkey from an old farmer for $100. The farmer agreed to deliver the mule the next day.

The next day, the farmer drove up and said, "Sorry, but I have some bad news. The donkey died."

"Well then, just give me my money back."

"Can't do that. I went and spent it already."

"Okay then. Just unload the donkey."

"What ya gonna do with him?"

"I'm going to raffle him off."

"You can't raffle off a dead donkey!"

    "Sure I can. Watch me."

A month later the farmer met up with the city boy and asked, "Whatever happened with that dead donkey?"

"I raffled him off. I sold 500 hundred tickets at two dollars apiece and made a profit of $898."

    "Didn't anyone complain?"

"Just the guy who won. So I gave him his two dollars back."

P.S. I should state this is how I won the lottery.

    This is a raffle.

    Private raffles are illegal.

    Running private raffles is illegal.

Your 'friend' ought to try a new scam before he ends up in the clink. Ignorance of the law, if the case, is no excuse, IMO.

At a minimum, this SL will go for $150k. I don't know the year, condition or mileage, but the real winner of this "contest" is the guy unloading the SL well above market value!

I don't know whether or not it is illegal to run a essay contest or not. He told me that he's looked into it and a raffle is illegal, but not an essay contest because it takes skill to win. I told him to hire someone to be the judge and to get a lawyer to make sure he is doing everything correctly. He is an honest person. I wouldn't have posted this if I didn't think he was honest.

Dont blame tpower22 he just posted the link for me. I am the guy running the contest. If you think I am an idiot so be it. The funds will be held in escrow with the judges being a 3rd party. I wanted to do a raffle for less but found them not to be legal. I found this and seemed like a good way to sell a car and give someone the chance to own something they might not ever afford. I keep hearing it is going above market but at the same time who ever were to win would get it well below market. If any of you have a better idea as far as a contest I am all ears. Just trying something new and didnt mean to offend any one or get any one upset. I thought car guys would be all over the chance to win a car for 125.00. I am open to anything from any one that would make this more legit and help to get more people on board.

Too late for that one my friend :) If you wanna sell the car, just sell it. Maybe you had good intentions (I doubt it), but this is the wrong way to go about it. What do you mean the laws say it's illegal to raffle it for less? Where did you find that out? Less than what?
There are way too many scams these days btw. Escrow and 3rd party judging don't mean squat :) How do we know you didn't create the escrow company and use your friends friends for the 3rd part? Fake escrows are created all the time, ask the Nigerians.

I'm preplexed by this whole deal. If (huge IF) you can legally have this "contest" to sell your car, why would the law stipulate the minimum amount that you would personally have to recoup? That just doesn't make sense. In addition to that, the fact that you're obviously getting much more than market value for your car sends up red flags in droves. You can try to keep spinning it as a great way to get an SL65 for $125, but most people will continue to see right through your plan and feel like they're getting fleeced.

I'll give you credit for coming up with a creative way to move your car. I'm also not suggesting that you've got anything but honest intentions with this plan. There are just too many issues for me to think it will work.
