    Hello,

Firstly apologies if this is off topic as it is not Ferrari specific. I'm a car enthusiast and have owned a few sports cars in the past (Audi R8 V10 and Porsche 911 Carrera S). I have sold those (just daily driving an AMG now) and am now really getting obsessed with the idea of starting a collection of rarer supercars. I drove the hell out of my R8 and 911 (they were both daily's) but am also thinking of this new set of vehicles from an investment perspective as they have much higher value. I've done all the CAGR calculations, cost of climate controlled storage, insurance etc. and plan to hold the cars for at least 10+ years. I've honed in on the first two vehicles I'd like to acquire:
1999-2004 Pagani Zonda (C12/C12S or Roadster)
    1992-1994 Jaguar XJ220

I have found an XJ220 in Miami and am going to check it out, but the Pagani's of that era seem invisible and there is no price data I can find anywhere. How would I even begin to find one? How much would it cost? Is there an concierge/agent or "guru" that can help me connect with a private seller? I've reached out to a few dealers in Europe that have Zonda's on their "Sold" page to ask for advice but have not received response.

With the R8 and 911 I just bought them like a regular car, but I'm guessing the XJ220 will probably be upwards of $500k, and the Pagani I have no idea -- I have budgeted $1mm. I've seen 2017 Zonda's go for $5mm+ so I might just be dreaming. Obviously will need mechanical inspection but beyond that do I need some sort of automotive attorney or something like that to represent me for the purchase.

Beyond that -- what am I missing in terms of how these cars differ from your more standard sports cars? Am I gonna pay $25k to ship it to Italy/England and get a part replaced? What are the hidden costs?

This world is new to me -- I'm not an ultra billionaire, just a young guy that made just enough dough to scrape at these sorts of things without completely breaking the bank.

I posted 2 cars (Zonda and XJ220) ... not 3 :) -- The zonda is a stretch. Let's see if this can work!

Sorry for my initial skepticism. We get so many insincere posts that I unfairly judged you and your intentions. I hope you can accept my apology and forgive my presumptuousness.

    ***

Getting an XJ should be pretty straightforward, as there are several available right now. However, I might have misunderstood your original post—A Zonda C12 under $1 million*? Is this a project car you're intending?

Nice to hear you are local and it’s a happy coincidence, as I’m always eager to connect with local collectors; let me know a good time and date (via IM), and happy to met so I may apologize in person.

ISSIMI is a great location to meet up and discuss next steps.

    Kindest regards

P.S. People here know I'm a man of my word, I'll have a shiny Benjamin waiting for you! You don't even have to pull the trigger*

There is no offense taken and no apology needed — we are all treading in the waters of the anonymous web!

I have no clue what Zondas of that era trade as there is very little information on the net. I saw a 2010 Zonda at a Bonhams auction for 800k euros so that’s what I based my estimate on. I want to get connected in this world and the XJ is what I’m really focusing on as my first investment. I think the car is beautiful and iconic and the production numbers are low enough that it could sky rocket. I have been told the quality is very hit or miss with many badly maintained instances.

Like I said I’m not a billionaire or anything, these cars would represent a big part of my net worth. I expect it to be a 1-2 year journey to find the first car at the right price point.

Yes, those have definitely been 'called up' so to speak.

As for the XJ220,. No doubt you'll track one down, they are relatively plentiful. My offer stands if you are in need of a trusted broker, see info and contact details in DM.

Either way, best of luck on your car hunt!

The Pagani might be a bit of a stretch. In Switzerland there are currently 4 Paganis listed for sale. Mostly newer ones. The prices are in Swiss francs. The exchange rate to USD is roughly 1:1 so you can interpret these prices as USD to get a ballpark number.

Forgive me, I never gave you any good advice in my prejudice.

    **

Buckle up, here come the 10 Commandments of High-End Car Ownership:

    1. Thou Shalt Study with Obsession: Learn all about your object of desire. Any low-volume car has quirks, and knowing those “gotchas” can save your wallet and sanity. But for the love of all things automotive, make sure you’ve actually driven the car before dropping the cash. It’s like thinking you want to be with someone only then discovering you can’t stand their personality, the more apt analogy is not family friendly.

    2. Thou Shalt Watch the Market: Keep your eyes on the auction blocks, where a broker/insider is a must is the private deals. Public databases/auctions only show 'half' the story - at the high end, cars have direct exchanges (sometimes unorthodox) - I presume you know why.

    3. Thou Shalt Choose Thy Seller Wisely: There are two types of sellers: ones who are too rich to care about the cost of maintenance, and ones who are too rich to care about the cost of maintenance. Sound the same? - actually opposite. :) Buy from the first one. (eh second one, uh - I mean the one that took care of the car.)

    4. Thou Shalt Inspect with Extreme Prejudice: Get a specialist, not a generalist, to inspect the car. The one that works on your specific car, not just read about them.

    5. Thou Shalt Expect High Maintenance Costs: Expect maintenance costs to be relatively exorbitant, happens with any cars with small run lines.

    6. Thou Shalt Secure the Holy Documentation: Make sure every piece of provenance is in place. And yes, that includes the $1,000 wrench in the toolkit. It’s not just a wrench; it’s a sticklers requirement to future resale value.

    7. Thou Shalt Befriend Fellow Owners: Their knowledge is pure gold. Buy them a coffee, pick their brains, and learn from their mistakes before you make your own.

    8. Thou Shalt Find a Proper Mechanic: Trust me, it’s not if something goes wrong, it’s when. Official dealers might be shiny, but even they sometimes outsource (unofficially of course) the tricky stuff. Know who’s really turning the wrenches.

    9. Thou Shalt Obey the Law: Importing or exporting? Make sure your car isn’t about to get impounded for missing paperwork or failing emissions.

    10. Thou Shalt Store Thy Treasure Safely: Proper storage is a must. Your car deserves better than a dusty corner of the garage. Also, get insurance that’ll actually cover its full value—no “bargain” policies here.
Now go forth and conquer the high-end car world!

P.S. Will get you intouch with someone I personally known for 20 years locally via DM.

@Simon -- thanks for the link to the British cars forum I hadn't come across that! Will post there.

@Elsi : Thanks for the info, yeah those prices are insane. TBH I dislike everything Pagani has done after the Zonda. I chatted with a forum member and I now understand that I was an order of magnitude off on price point of the Zonda (maybe even by 10x).

A few other cars I have also started looking at as I've come down from the clouds is a late 80s Ferrari 328 GTS or a late 2000's 360 Spider. Ferrari 348 TS is also really nice. I think all these cars are iconic, fun, and are still under priced. Ultimately the goal is to have 3 cars and hold that portfolio for 10 years. The process for getting one of these doesn't feel as scary and unknown as the XJ220 or Zonda, mostly because of higher numbers, owners, lower price point... which was the intent of the original post. I've now connected with Don Law who seems to be a guru in the field of XJ220's and @paulchua was super helpful with offering some possible connections.

The XJ220 is just a bet I really want to make. Production numbers under 300? Still at the original sale price?! To me it feels like when the Carrera GT was selling at $350k and that car had over 1200 examples! It's just crazy.

Sorry but the XJ220 will never have the same aura as the CGT. It's just not a good car. The engine is uninspiring and the car is not v reliable itself. Plus it's way too big to really enjoy on fun roads. It looks beautiful yes. But that's where it ends.
Id buy one hoping to not lose money on them but i dont see them going 2x or 3x any time soon.

Zonda - yes, that ship has sailed and it sailed quickly! A C12 or 12S is probably $4m-$5m. An F is around $10m. Then the limited ones are even more. Absolutely bonkers.

As for a 360 - i think if your main goal is value, id look for a 360 Modena and not a spider, and id look for a gated car, with racing seats. Those are rare(r) and will be the ones that will appreciate.

    Greetings,

I’ve just sent an introduction email to you and my broker. Wishing you the best of luck with your search for a Pagani, XJ220, and Ferrari 360!

I’ve had the pleasure of experiencing the Pagani a few times, and you truly have impeccable taste. While our Jaguar community isn’t too active, you’ll find the 360 forum to be quite lively.

    Warm regards.

I will agree wholeheartedly with paulchua's asessment of things.

I have a warehouse full of stuff I like, not necessarily any kind of specifically curated collection beyond that. I can't agree more with the "talk to other owners" bit - a strong collection and a good experience will only come from relationships and networking. You will definitely need a good, trusted broker- they can find available cars that no one else even knows about. The higher end the car, the deeper the layers. I've been involved in deals where no one actually doing the deal spoke to a principal on either end, all done through brokers and handlers. This is why trust is imperative. Di the car you're looking at sell at RM 2 years ago for half of the current ask? does the market warrant that? Or, why is it now offered for half of what it sold for a few years ago? What's the history there? Guys who haven't done their homework risk getting robbed on every deal. And, some won't care but I don't have enough money not to care yet :)
You really need to know the market, the cars, the holes and swings in the market. A good broker can help with those projections.
Lastly, a good trusted mechanic. You can't park cars in the corner for 10 years, they'll need to be properly looked after. There's probably already several good books on that topic, but it's no less important.

    Good luck on your journey!
