Hiya Ferrari people, I am after some help and advice! At age 38 I have finally decided to follow my life long dream and get a Ferrari. Buying one in the USA and shipping it out of LA to NZ is looking like my best option..... But I would be intersted in other options, maybe the UK or Austraila etc? I have joined a number of Ferrari news groups and subscribed to the Ferrari market letter and contacted a dealer in Connecticut. I am after a 308GTB, with carbs, in steel..... (steel just because the glass ones I have seen have been much more $$$) MUST have been red and tan from the factory orginally I want to buy a "good" car, running car to use, not show, service history or most of it, need not be restored and as I am a professional painter, paint condition does not worry me. Mileage worries me less than condition and seivce history. I am flexable on price as I appreciate that the condition and service history and any number of other factors dictate the market value. I have given myself 12 months to find and buy the "right" car. I look forward to any comments advice or offers of a cars! Regards Gavin, New Zealand
Can you legally drive a left hand drive car in NZ? You have your work cut out for you finding just the right car in just the right color and condition. They are getting hard to find, unless you want to do a lot of work to it the minute you buy it. Birdman
I bought my 1977 308GTB in October. I nearly bought a different '77 GTB, which, as far as I know, is still available. FYI -- it's bloody cold here in Canada, so I can say for a fact that the one I was interested in is currently in storage. If you PM me with an email address I'll send you some photos. It's red with a tan interior and is in very nice shape. It did have a couple of rust bubbles, but nothing too serious as far as I could tell. The previous owner was a millionaire with deep pockets -- he had the seats re-upholstered and put $15K into a top end rebuild. I seem to recall that it has 43k miles on the clock. As far as I recall, everything worked. The only thing I noticed which did put me off a bit was a slight vibration in the steering. Possibly tie rod ends, but I am told that it's more likely to be a worn steering rack on a 308. Apart from that the car started well, ran strongly, there was no smoke, and it sounded lovely.
I almost forgot -- it wasn't just the front end wobble that put me off, but it also needed a belt service (I think they were done 4 years ago).
Needed belt service shouldn't put you off, because it is an opportunity to negotiate a lower price for the car. You can then find your own reliable place with the comfort of knowing that the belt changes are actually done and done right...
Newbydude, what was the dollar range he was asking? I'm in western Canada, so it is little trouble to get. Thanks, Scott
Hi MotoMeccanica, The fellow was asking CDN$45,000, but he knew this was way too much. Realistically, he was hoping to get CDN$40,000, but he agreed to let me have it for CDN$39,000. I tried several tricks in order to bring him down in price but he wouldn't go any lower. It's chassis # 20875. Does anybody know if that's a Euro?
Newbydude, Can you email me pics that you had, I'm not a subscribed member so I'm sure I can't PM. email address is [email protected] Thanks for the help, Scott
