Does anyone have a set of Hyper-Flow cats for the '78 308 carbed car at a price I can't refuse? Concerning engine heat, in your experience, are the Hyper-Flow cats any coler and safer than the stainless test pipes? What is the cause of the "stink" when using straight test pipes over the Hyper-Flow cats. If all the connections are tight, where does the stink come from? If you have a set of stainless test pipes or a set of Hyper-Flow cats you would like to unload please email me. I would like to run a test of the two systems. Jim <[email protected]>

ANSA offers a line of high performance cats.....check with Atlanta.....

The 'stink' is your carbs being out of whack, IMO.......have you used a 4 gas analyzer to calibrate them......good ignition?

Any car with no cats has "the smell." Cats clean up the unburned hydrocarbons that come out of your engine. Smell any motorcycle, lawn mower or older car and you will recognize the smell.

You can tune engines to run cleaner and smell less, but you can't get rid of it. And when tuned to smell less they may be running too lean.

Hyperflow and other brands of reduced-backpressure cats have a matrix that flows better than a conventional cat, so they reduce your backpressure and reduce the amount of horsepower "lost" through the cat significantly. Most people with hyperflows report little to no noticable difference in power/sound between the cats and a straight pipe (test pipe) in its place.

You can buy the hyperflows ready to go for your car (I think) from Ricambi America. Others have saved a little by buying generic high flow cats (there are several brands, check out summitracing.com) and then had a custom exhaust shop simply weld on the appropriate flanges, using the stock cats as a guide, or even recycling the flanges from the stock cats. An Fchatter here in MA did his 348 for under $500.

I bought my HyperFlow cat from Daniel at Ricambi America (FChat sponsor and great guy). It got rid of the smell from the test pipe I had, but still keeps the same great sound and quick revs. I'm glad I made the change. The HyperFlow is like having a LEGAL test pipe without the odor!!

Kudos to you (and all) that are keeping cats on the cars. I do agree that cats on a carb'd car is a little more risky, but if properly maintained will be fine. I've got 104k on my '78.

I'm not about to put cats on my pre-cat '77 308 only because it never had them and I'm used to the stinky exhaust. When I start it, I open the garage door, roll the car outside, then start it, so I don't stinkify the garage! It's part of the charm!

On the Mondial though, which does have cats, I will maintain them. I'm pretty sure they are on their last legs at this point, so I plan to upgrade them with hyperflows soon.

Daniel, ya got hyperflows for the Mondial QV?

Sorry I missed this thread. I have been battling a nasty cold (Luca, the little twerp, gave it to me!)

Free shipping, free donuts, and heck, I'll even toss in a free QV oil change kit if you buy them in the next 24 hours.

EDIT : Birdman do you have a (1) dual-cat icar setup: http://www.ricambiamerica.com/product_info.php?cPath=175&products_id=206 or (2) single cat QV: http://www.ricambiamerica.com/product_info.php?cPath=175&products_id=207

    I'm guessing it's #1, right?

    Daniel,
Conveniently (not!) I have the dual system. Man, they don't give those bad boys away, do they??? Ever considered manufacturing your own system using custom components for about half the price of the Hyperflows?

Don't you love how kids bring home all the germs from all the other kids at school? Man, that sucks!
