Ok, this may be a little unconventional or absurd, but like my father always told me right before he would say "no", it doesn't hurt to ask. I attempted my first smog since purchasing my 95 355B and failed miserably. Due to the fact that I do not run test pipes, ran techron thru a tank prior, and properly warmed the car, this baffled me. Come to find out that someone carefully and skillfully gutted my cats prior to purchase, so essentially I am running without them. This was confirmed by Ben at Salerno Motorsports. Here is my unconventinal question to you, my fellow f-chatters:

Would someone (preferrably in the Sacramento/surrounding area) be willing to "rent" me their cats (not the furry kind) so that I can install them for smog only and then remove them and give them back? Of course if any damage is done in the process, I would either buy them or correct the problem. All the work will be done by a reputable muffler company (many of you know Colby at Mufflertech).

As far as me, my name is Dan and I have attended several ********** events and the last event at Masque in El Dorodo Hills. I have a red over black 355 with the challenge grill and shields. I have posted on here a few times in the past.

    Hi, Dan!

I'm on the cusp of finally getting my 355 to pass smog myself (it's only failed 5 times so far!), and wanted to let you know that there's a pretty decent variety of things that will cause your 355 to fail. I also had dead cats on one side, but replacing them didn't get me there. Make sure you get any OBDII codes checked out, and O2 sensors need to be in prime shape, too... These cars simply weren't built for passing "rolling along at 15mph and 25mph" tests, so unless everything's lined up very pretty-like, it's gonna fail, as mine has.

Best of luck to you, Dan - I'll see you at the next Masque event, hopefully!

    Hey Dan-

Get in touch with my dad. He still has the cat's for his car and has already loaned them to someone else who was in the exact same situation as you are. This was within the last two months and the 355 that used my dad's cat's passed with flying colors. We are out of town for the Lake Tahoe Concours d'Elegance this weekend but will be back Sunday night. His contacts are (916) 485-1262 or [email protected]

Thank you very much Shopboy87. I may be looking at an alternate route now and just putting the cats back on for good. This car may be for sale soon.

Once you get the cars to pass the first time (for purchase), and if you are looking for a solution to the bi-annual problem; PM me.

    Best!
    Ben.

95's gonna be a tough one as the 2.7 wasn't OBDII compliant. have you done a test yet to get a base line on the numbers? Orries' car was off just enough to warrant a look into the cats, sure enough one was gutted. with no fault codes it was frustrating, the O2 sensors have gotten 'lazy' and the cross counts are down, so the ECU is leaning on the lean side.

there are cats available for $450 per side, aftermarket and fit just fine.
