I am currently writing my big history essay, and I wondered if any of you guys had any good links to sites describing the events before, under and after the war. I really appreciate it.

Do you mean the first or second War of Independance? ;)

You know, that is one heck of a broad topic for a paper. Volumes of books have been written on the subject.

Perhaps you should pick one aspect or key player to study. May I suggest Thomas Payne?

Alexander Hamiton is a good read. He created the coast guard, national bank, IRS and others.

PM me if you want me to ship you the book. I don't think it is available in Denmark.

Just finished a full year course on US history at University and wrote an essay on the American Revolution 1775-1783.

My topic was the grievances of the 13 colonies that contributed to the revolution. This in itself is broad but can be narrowed down to some very important events. For example:

    1. 1763 Royal Proclamation: France kicked out of North America and settlement is prohibited beyond Appalachian mountains. This angered peeps wanting to expand

    2. Large array of 'Acts' most notably the Stamp Act of 1765: the 1st "internal" tax. Increased colonists concerns about British parliament. "No taxation without representation!"

    3. "Intolerable Acts" of 1774: the final straw

This provides a good basis and IMO the grievances and events leading to the revolution is an excellent and very interesting topic.

Infinite resources on the internet (www.wikipedia.com) and Tspringer suggested Thomas Pane: his small piece "Common Sense" is a short and important read in regards to inciting the colonists ex. why should colonies be run by a tiny island?

I found using primarily, if not entirely primary sources for quotes (i.e. diaries, newspapers...etc) from the era will get you a much better grade.

    Anywayz, hopes this helps!

Thanks all, but the subject is already narrowed down.

I have to get into a 2 things specificly, "Boston Tea Party" "The boston Massacre"

Then I have to analyze and evaluate what benefits that were in it for the americans and what were in it for the british (if anything) - Then I have to do the same when the war was over, what influence did it leave and how has it affected them today. So I have a really big span I have to get filled in :)

Oh, well you've picked an easy set.

After the colonial companies disintegrated in the Interregnum (King Charles), the colonies were pretty much left on their own. After the Brits had to spend money on the French and Indian war, they wanted it back in taxes. Bostonians didn't like taxes. (Boy how times have changed.)

People have questioned the wisdom, in Palistine, of throwing rocks at Uzi toting Israeli soldiers. But tossing rocks at armed soldiers isn't a new phenomenon. (Boston "massacre".)

Also check information on "the Farmer's Rebellion" (1787 or so). After tossing out the Brits, they started shooting at their own governor.

Bostonians don't get along with anybody. ;)

Matt, unless you understand Danish, I don't think you will get much out of it :) - And there is no left spin on it, a history assingment doesn't really encourage any biased views, you can't really do anything else then write a resume, analyse and evaluate. :)

But I can write what I think about the US at that time. I think the US was courages, and a country filled with small heroes. People like Paine, Israel Putnam, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Roger Sherman og Robert L. Livingston. The American colonies where sanctioned with intolerable and completely un-acceptable laws, such as the ones put in place after the Boston Tea Party. When the Continental meetings where held, and the French had helped the americans in Yorktown and the British king was forced to acknowledge the colonies/states independent, and the constitution was in place, the world became a better place.

Well, it was revolutionary. There's no way to spin this. ALL other countries in the world at that time, did not put the opinion and right of the people in first position, the constitution did. And if the government didn't follow it, then the government could be removed by the people. This is extraordinary thinking, especially considered what century were are talking here.

The War of Independence began at 4:30am on April 15, 1861, when revolutionary troops fired on foreign troops who refused to leave Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor....

wow what a topic. you need to read a lot before you can even choose which angle to write about.
good books i have read that touch on the subject:

    'john adams' by david mcullough
'ben franklin' by i dont remember
    'alexander hamilton' by ron chernow

and you might be able to pick up '1776' thats has just come out.

Yeah, I know.. It's a big mouthful. I have chosen not to describe the key persons intensely, but focus on some events instead. But I might change it now, I think it would be a great idea to maybe choose at least one.
