Do NOT look in this thread or read any further if you have NOT seen the movie...! The ending is discussed at length below and in subsequent posts... . . . . . . . . . . . . . . i wanted to discuss the ending of the movie further, with those who have seen the movie and read the book... i, myself, have not read the book, (or heard the original radio broadcast for that matter) but the ending in the movie seemed sort of silly to me... In this thread, Spasso suggests the following: With which, i respectfully disagree... i don't see how aliens, who are more intelligent than us, can watch us and study us for centuries without ever being seen, fail to acknowledge human viri, bacteria, germs, disease, etcetera... It just seems like a very flawed ending... i think, if Spielberg had ended the world in the movie, it would've left movie-goers leaving with a deeper emotion and thought for the movie... Something not so easily forgotten... Any thoughts...?
Well the whole concept was never really about the specifics of an alien attack. Alien invasions are used to see the human condition, have social commentary on our fears of invasion by a foreign unseen enemy. Having said that, the whole idea of the aliens being underground for years without anyone finding them is silly. Why would they wait sooooo long to attack? Why not enslave humans thousands of years ago?
viruses are the smallest organisms in the known world, and they killed a species superior to humans. yes... they could develop vaccines, but viruses mutate quickly and are hard to detect... that's why AIDS is so deadly, you don't know you have it until you're already too far gone
So I'll add mine here from the other thread just for fun. So that would mean they would have gotten their shots before heading for Earth yes? Remember, the original story was written before computers so they had to think of the next most likely thing. I might as well add the astute observation of jim03 as well; viruses are the smallest organisms in the known world, and they killed a species superior to humans. yes... they could develop vaccines, but viruses mutate quickly and are hard to detect... that's why AIDS is so deadly, you don't know you have it until you're already too far gone Another thought along those same lines is the wholesale death of native Americans, Hawaiians and Aboriginies (to name a few) caused by the introduction of " The white mans disease". There could be the possibility that the aliens never had disease, knew what it was or how to identify it. Just speculation, ruminations and food for thought. __________________
Spielberg wanted to stayed true to the original so the mirco organisms took down the aliens. It seems lame but like stated above bacteria is forever evolving so if the aliens put their ships underground a million years ago, the bacteria from back then would be totally different at present day. Also, the aliens were pretty dumb to drink the dirty water in Tim Robbins basement in that one scene, like if they would've just hit up some poland spring or a brita faucet they probably would've been a lot better off.
I thought overall the movie was pretty good. A few flaws....as mentioned above. I like how no matter what scale of destruction was taking place, the Van stayed in tact, and conveniently always had a nice roadway through the destruction and chaos to travel on . But I like the movie overall. It wasnt exceptional, but I didnt feel like I got ripped off. The movie reminds me of a nightmare dream one might have. Very wierd and intriguing.
i'm just trying to keep in mind that, one, Spielberg could have changed it slightly to fit the times and, two, the aliens, as the story was told, were more intelligent than humans...
Egg Zactly! "Speculative Fiction" isn't about teleportation. It's about the effects of teleportation on human culture. (The end of the "alibi", instant "flash crowds" at every newsworthy event, etc.) The book was about the reactions of different individuals confronted with an alien invasion. That's what made the 1938 Mercury Theatre presentation so ironic -- creating its own public reaction. This is something that Hollyweird has never done well -- they get distracted by the special effects, and forget that there are normal humans interacting with the ray guns. But then, Hollyweird is a tad short on "normal" humans, too.
It was a good movie , but there were to many flaws. After hiding under ground for so long, someone would have found the ships sooner or later . In the basement scene, the aliens have lasers that can wipe people out, but can't look through a wooden wall ? It would take more then just replacing the starter in a Caravan to get it back up & running .
Right after emps have taken out the cars, watches and clocks, some guy starts video taping the whole thing. RIIIIGHT. also, in reply to the post above by NNO, Hollywood messes everything up. They take things at face value, which screws up stories like sci-fi/fantasy. Look at Godzilla. They turned it into a giant lizard, which, taken at face value, is okay. However, the original Godzilla was invunerable to anything the army had in its arsenal. Godzilla is an unstoppable force that man created, but can't stop. That message is somewhat lost when it is destroyed with 4 missiles from an f16.
I always thought that EMPs only damaged electronics that already were turned on. So having a computer/car/camera, etc off, I would think it wouldn't be damaged. Is this correct or will an EMP damage anything that contains some sort of a circuit? I thought the movie was a good summer flick, but there were some mistakes already mentioned that I talked about after the movie. My friend said it was similar to how the aliens in Signs had a problem with water. My friend said "omg, there's water here?" as if the aliens said that, LOL, I kept laughing at the way he said that. Also, I don't know why Tom Cruise and his kids left his ex's house even though the aliens had already left. Why go after the aliens (I'm assuming he wanted to find his ex in Boston)? I think it was dumb either way to leave a place where the aliens have already left.
I liked the movie, the aliens & the tripods were cool But PLEASE, they had to feed that screaming little brat to the aliens,I had a headache when I left from the little kid screaming so much Nobody wants to hear a childs high potched scream, much less pay to hear it, over & over & over. that alone will stop me from watching this movie a 2nd time
Agreed. I guess I'll need to see the movie to comment further but as soon as I saw that it was Cruise in the starring role I nixed the idea. I got my fill of him in Top Gun. A fun experiment would be to get ahold of the original movie. I saw it when I was very young and scared the h*ll out me! The original is a real eye opener as to the mindset of the 50's when UFO's were seen many times and there was a bit of a scare going on.
just as I was settling in, the movie ended. what a let down. I should have waited until it was pirated in about a week and seen it at home on DVD. oh' well the special effects were good. I'm sure the left would agree that Bush didn't protect against terrorism. (joke)
Like I said in other threads, I think it was a little cheesy how Cruise and his kids luck was about 176% better compared to EVERY PERSON ON EARTH. And those Mini Vans, geez, I think I may trade in my GMC Jimmy for one, I dont think my car could survive an alien invasion and then 4 wheel like that. Impressive work Dodge ( or whoever puts that van out)
O yea, and how is that these aliens; who show no remorse towards the majority population of our earth, decide to sit and watch Tom Cruise and his Daughter sleep and then not kill them after Tommy hacks away at their eye thing?
Ok let me see. They were here hundreds of thousands of years go to hide their machines so that they could later attack a race of people that did not exist yet. Yeeaahh right. All while the first time around they did not just go ahead and stay on earth and they did not get sick the first time around. Anyone knows that when you want too get rid of millions and billions of creatures you can't kill them one at a time. You have to fumigate. Really well thought out. Only Americans will go for that crap so I predict a big success. It was decent if you forgot about all that. Wait for the video. It's not worth paying movie prices for.
intresting..... im sitting here at my computer and watching this lighting storm right....i then realize that there is no following thunder....... uh oh....
I thought it was a cool movie, the concept and all and the machines were awesome. But my dad and I just thought there were quite a few loose ends that needed to be tied. There is a little inconsistency as to why some electronics worked when they shouldn't have. And also as stated above, why was their van COMPLETELY intact, with all the airplanes and stuff. I thought it was funny when the reporters opened up the van looking as if to say "get in" but insted said "Are you a survivor [of the crassh]" "No" "Thats too bad, that woulda made a great story" and then she shuts the van. I thought that was funny. I would also like to know how the son lived considering the WHOLE HILL was BLOWN UP. Didn't make sence to me. Also why was the house where the mom was pretty much intact??? For instance, the other houses were destroyed, by plain crashes, fire, or just the tripods itself. Oh well. Its ok we still got our moneys worth by hoppin' to 2 othere movies
The 1950's movie had a Army Scientist and a hot Blonde trapped in the farm house. They had some adult conversation about what was happening. It was interesting and even a little sexy. When will they stop F*cking-up every big budget summer movie... by making it about a divorced father and his struggle to save his little kid! The Third Jurassic Park movie was all about a divorced couple fighting over their kid, The Day After Tomorrow (Ice Age, Big Budget movie)- After a fantastic first half.... we see second hour about a dad trying to save his son! Now WAR OF THE WORLDS... It could have been SO MUCH MORE about the Monsters, or the Army, or the Scientist, or any number of smart people....BUT NO! Can we get a blue-collar, divorced, no-nothing, type of a guy... that is forced to learn about being a better parent...during a disaster? Every fricking time! Must every character and plot be about a single parent and screaming kid?
All I have to say is that any remake sucks horribly. I walked out of war of the worlds. Worst. movie. ever.
hummm..A little difficult to beleave..But if you did you missed a fun movie. Sometimes movies are just supposed to be entertaining. Not meat to be annalyzed under a microscope. Its not like it was a documentry with lies etc. It a movie about aliens for outerspace wanting to take over our planet..fun stuff..and the effects were really cool...
