I saw it sell at the no reserve auction for $300,000. They list the serial number as 8167. Tonight I looked it up on the 330 register and accoding to them it is a 330 GT. They add, "Identified as a 330 GT 2+2 Series II in PF records per H. Raab's FSN Part I." Any thoughts or comments? Maybe the 330 Register is wrong. But maybe 330 GTS valuations have reached the point that it is worth it for people to convert them and pass them off as original spyders???
Hi, Six - as a 330 GTC owner, I've paid very close attention to activity on this model since I bought mine in 1975. I have never heard of a Spyder conversion BUT, if I learn of someone doing it, I would get in line immediatley!! Bob Z.
No problem. Keeping the original air cleaner, change the body, interior, suspension, frame and driveline - what could be simpler!!! Bob Z.
So it sounds like it has a different wheelbase. In any case, either that book is wrong or the serial number of that car is wrong.
I saw #8167 on this website and the location of the seller on his website is Gazelle, CA near weed in Northern CA http://www.lmccars.com/car_detail.cgi?car_id=63 If this car went for $300K then Sheehan's recent sale of a Euro version for alleged $325K and Heritage's listed at $348K is optimistic
Kare - any idea who did the conversion? For the past ten years, I've considered having mine converted. Bob Z.
Yowza - Kerry also lists 8167 but as a GT 2 headlight not as a GTS http://www.parrotbyte.com/330GTRegistry/SNIndexP31.htm That is a heck of a lot of work
If it was a conversion, does Russo and Steele have an obligation to the bidding public to disclose this information?
i saw a photo of a 330 gt 2+2 that was cut into a spider the other day while looking through old ferrari market letters. i will see if i can find the photo again. it actually looks very good.
How could that be if 10167 started life as a Spyder...? 8167: 330 GT 2+2 Series II. Light blue with black leather. For sale in 1991; was still a coupe. 10167: 330 GTS Pininfarina Spyder. Red with black interior. Last seen in Switzerland, 1988. 10623: 330 GTC Pininfarina Coupe - Spyder Conversion. Red with black interior. Early 80's rumor had the car wrecked and parted out. Auctioned at Brooks Ferrari Sale in Gstaad, Switzerland, December, 2000. Sold.
Are you confused? We are talking about the 330 GTS that was sold at Russo and Steele ("S," as in "Spyder"). How could it be? Because it started life as a Spyder and is still a Spyder. ?????
LOL... But sixcarbs is saying that the one that sold at R&S is S/N 8167...? So if someone cut 8167 along the way and R&S just auctioned it off, why would 10167 even come into question...? Unless R&S didn't actually auction off 8167, someone knows where it really is R&S just THINKS they auctioned off 8167... Am i missing something...? Seriously...
Yes, seriously. Try to follow this... R&S auctioned off a 330 GTS and listed the s/n as "8167." 8167 could not have possibly been a 330 GTS or even a 330 GTC that was converted (8329 was the first production GTC), so which do you think is a more likely scenario? 1. Someone converted a 330 GT 2+2 into a 330 GTS (not a small feat!) and Russo & Steele auctioned this car off without disclosing that it was actually a 330 GT 2+2. 2. They misprinted the chassis number. Hmm. What do you think? My suggestion is that the chassis number of the 330 GTS that was sold was something other than "8167" (obvious, no?) and could have possibly been 10167 (just a guess).
Kare - any source of pix of this car? I never thought of anyone doing this.......tho more than once I looked at my car, just speculating on the magnitude of the changes necessary...... Not a great idea IMHO, as it will always have that 'story'..... Plus i think the big greenhouse looks cool! James
Someone built it out of an ashtray, a shiftknob, and a tach, with remnants of two frame members and a sparkplug. It's all original. 330GTS 10173 was 1st Ferrari I ever drove. Very warm spot in my heart for them.
Okay, that's where i lost you... i didn't know that was assumed or suspected or otherwise stated... i'm back on track now; thanks...
Then there is 10913, which is almost the opposite case, having been converted by Bill Harrah from a GTS into a coupe with a removable targa roof panel. http://www.barchetta.cc/All.Ferraris/national.meet.2000/img0022-1.html
I think part of the confusion was that the 330gts was run out of sequence at RS and a 330 GTC was run in its place. It was a legit spider that was a European Car without a lot of known history. I would have judged the car a strong 2...body fit was reasonably good, chrome good, weather stripping could use to be replaced but a nice car that could use a little detailing to improve it. I owned 9781 which was platinum a few years back and thought this car in today's market sold for about what it was worth. The coupe, on the other hand which sold for 125 plus commission, sales tax needed at least 50-75k to make it a nice car! the nart spider supposedly sold for $3.6 against a $4mm reserve.
I have no idea, but please don't cut your car; there is no going back after you have turned a real one into a fake. Then again I have this strong thing for coupes and against convertibles. I have never found a car that would look better in my eye in open form compared to a coupe.
