Yesterday I was snooping around under the front bonnet and decided to remove my washer bottle cap. I took a sample of the fluid with my finger b/c it smelled kinda pungent.

Well it certainly was, I tried to place the odor and the best I could come up with was that it reminded my of Acetone. The car did come back from the dealer after a major.

Does anyone know what this is?

My next approach was to syphon it out.

If it smelled like something you wouldn't want to drink....I would pour it out, disconncet the spray nosels and find a way to flush the system with lots of clean water being carefull to not let the smelly fluid anywhere near the paint.

The fluid in the bottle was ALCOHOL, as in Isoprophyl ETOH.

Well at least it would not have frozen come December.

In Ca we just don't worry about that.

Isopropyl alcohol (IPA) and Ethyl alcohol (ETOH) are not one and the same - one is the rubbing kind, the other is the drinking kind. Neither smells like acetone, and you wouldn't want to drink the former. :)

They often have different mixtures for different seasons,
Winter mix for up north is often good for 20 below zero...not much need for that in Florida or California

IPA. definetly not acetone. I did a re-smell and confirmation by another olfactory.
