I didn't get any replies on the tech section so I thought I'd post it here: My bottle has started to leak between the bottle and pump. Anyone know how to disassemble this for repairs? Henry
Hmm, I didn't reply there because I figured someone would know for sure having never paid any attention to mine, but usually you can twist the pump out and would be able to replace the seal. Have you looked at it yet? Maybe I'll take a look at mine this weekend.
I have had three new ones..they all leak! I don't use it and the pump is pathetic weak even when new ( OK, I will get the birdman's fuse panel)..I think the best this is to go at it with silicone sealant. IIRC , It is tough to get down into the O ring that (doesn't) seal it tight. I don't use mine and was thinking of removing the wipers liek they do on the dino 246's for esthetics ( although I think I can get a ticket for driving w/o wipers)
Hank, given all I have read here and in the tech area, it seems like the best idea is to just re-think the whole system then re-engineer a modern pump and use the old bottle with some kind of new o-ring seal. For me, the idea is to (1) make no irreversable changes, (2) save the original parts, and (3) make the new system look like the old system. That's my plan for the washers on my '79 308GTB. ---rick
C'mon Hanknum, you live in So Cal! Is this really a problem for you? Two words..."Rain-X". Seriously though, IIRC, the motor has a nipple on it that pokes through a grommet on the tank then a spring steel retaining washer is pressed on. Reminds me of building a ship in a bottle to get the motor on or off the bottle. Either the Mondial's or the TR's (or both) have a motor that is sold separately and easily changed.
Brian, A nit: It's a brass retaining ring. Does that separately available pump fit the 308 reservoir? BTW, DO NOT put Rain-X washer fluid in the reservoir, especially if you've got a Euro spare mounted upside down under it, especially do not leave it in the reservoir while stored during salt season. The Rain-X fluid drips down into the wheel & leaves a bright purple residue that no common solvents, incl. lacquer thinner will dissolve. The Rain-X tech support says mineral spirits removes it easily, WRONG, it doesn't touch it(don't ask). Haven't tried MEK, or Strypeze as I figure they'll take the paint off as well...
Hey Brian, I know, I know...I don't use it often, but I would like to keep it working. Are you out on the west coast now? Maybe you're the reason it is so hot and humid here now. You brought that "southern" weather with you. Verell, I don't think you're supposed to put the rain-x in the bottle. Usually you apply it to the windshield, unless they have a new product I'm not aware of. Henry
Hanknum, In addition to the windshield treatment you're referring to, Rain-X makes a windshield washer fluid: http://www.idealtruevalue.com/servlet/the-48757/Detail It leaves a Rain-X residue as it cleans your windshield. I stopped using it once I discovered that the Triple-Edge silicone wiper blades leave a similar water repellant residue, and also seem to last forever. Not to mention that I'm still a tad ticked that I can't get the purple stuff out of my spare's rim.
I just took a closer look and found out that the leak is not between the bottle and pump, but rather between the pump and motor. I guess I'm going to drill out the rivets and see what I can do. Anyone have any suggestions?
I got mine from a parts supplier in the UK...sells all kinds of itlian car parts ( I will check the name -- forgot just now - but not obscure, they advertise in Auto Italia mag. too I think, also many sponsors here can supply as well as rutlands) came OEM in the horsey box..leaked by the pump..we did an exchange and guess what another new OEM one in the box...leaked..so now I have it in there for a nice concuours kinda look but keep it empty ( or it will be empty by itself in a day anyway!)
call ted rutlands for a price check, these things are cr*p plastic and cr*p motors and leak, don't pay that unless you want concours...let this be a lesson to all of us, never put anything in those washer bottles but distilled water as it wll easily stain ( although I am impressed that your washer bottle actually held the blue washer fluid long enough for it to actually stain the plastic) I wuld also be curious that this washer/pumpset-up might be from another euro car's parts bin!
Mine looks original. and yes it holds fluid. I have never tried the pump to see if it works. My car is a euro model is that what you mean?
