I really like Google's products. I use gMail for my personal email and I think it has the best user interface of any email program out there. I also use Picasa for my photos and the calender and others. But I think it will be impossible for them to even come close to eBay's market though... they have that whole brand on lock down. Craig's list and others will suffer more though.

what is it ? looks like a craigslist copy. no ?

google has the name recognition. if they can come up with a better user interface, CHEAPER fees and a type of community rating that isn't sunbject to so much BS - they'll have a good shot at ebay.

No way. I don't see them making much of a dent in eBay at all. eBay and online auctions are already synomonous. It's like tissues and kleenex. However, lot of people have never heard of Craig's list, so it might hurt their market pretty bad.

there is plenty of room to undercut ebay fees (and google has money to burn). i am already hearing talk of the google payment system making a run on paypal. tie in some advert revenues.

people use ebay - i don't think they love it. they love google and craig.

No kidding, e-bay is driving me up the wall with their f'n fee's. Makes it hard to sell anything used on there anymore, unless it sells for full price the first time.

E-Bay reported a 24% increase in profits yesterday, so everyone is not tired of them. On the other hand, their stock is down 49% from its high 3 years ago, even with yesterday's bump, so there are certainly some doubts about the company.

I don't know how big a deal it is for a company to be synonymous with its market. Last time I looked, Xerox no longer was in first place in copier sales. For all i know, that may also be true for Kleenex.

My opinion is that Google buys a small island and starts on their world domination form there...we won't stand a chance

Your statement explains people's relationship with Ebay perfectly.

Ebay has a strong grasp of the market, but it's far from a strangle hold. People use Ebay out of necessity, not love. If Google can offer a viable alternative, Ebay will suffer. Just think how many people on this forum alone HATE Paypal for various reasons. Google knows this and will capitalize on the opportunity.

I think they can make a big dent if done right. Ebay has been the only real game for too long and overcharging accordingly. Lots of room for a better service out there IMO.

I just eyeballed Google Base for 15 seconds and I'm hooked, at least as search mechanism. Craigslist is indeed extensive but not having a global search capability is a PIA. As for selling .... we'll see.

Googlebase was released in October of 2005 and is filled with spam and stale content.
