I have a $6k budget to buy a watch. I am looking at either an OMEGA or a 44 MM PANERAI. MY brother in law keeps telling me to get the Panerai because it is the ****. What do you guys think?

they both cost about the same. :argue:

If you have to choose between those two, Panerai all the way. Omega is nice, but IMHO kinda in the Tag league now. Nice watches, but not at that level. 6k can be some very very nice watches, for me I would go for a Montblanc, IWC, or Chopard...

I'd always take an Omega over a Panerai. Just a personal preference of mine. I also really don't like that whole protected crown thing on the Panerai.

I recently purchased a perfect condition Panerai PAM 72 used in your price range. Gorgeous watch and it has the Zenith El Primero movement. I love it! Panerai makes some SWEET watches. My next will be a Marina Militare 47mm destro....

The Panerai would probably be the "smarter" choice, since it will hold it's value a lot better than an Omega.

For the most part they both use ETA movements, so there is no advantage to either. I own both a Panerai PAM210 and an Omega Planet Ocean. I actually like the Panerai over the Omega, even though they are very different watches.

If you find any one you like in our catalog, we can get it for you pretty quick and at a really good price :)

We only have one pre-owned Panerai left...

I received an Omege Speedmaster Broad Arrow as a gift, and I love it. With that said, go with the Panerai. I want one so badly.

If you only have one nice watch, probably the Omega. If more than one, get the Panerai. I just don't like wearing that size of watch day after day. As mentioned, find a nice used one and get a better grade Omega or save some money on the one you picked.

    Congrats on your upcoming purchase.........

It's great the help you can get on this board. I would consider it all. Though, if I was going to spend $6k on a watch I would look at a preowned Breitling. You can get a much better value if you go this route. Omega makes a nice watch and their models have been around for a long time. I hate to say it, but I think Panerai is a fad.....

At least look at some different options and post back what you do.

    Good luck

Yin nailed it, the Pan is too big for an every day watch. I have an Omega Speedmaster and a Pan 25, I hardly ever wear the Speedmaster.

My PAM72 automatic chronograph is 40mm. Not all Panerai are giant.

I disagree on the "fad" comment. Panerai have a unique style to them and the company has an interesting history. Add to that the fact that they are moving into manufacturing their own movements and they seem here to stay. Panerai will never sell numbers or have the brand recognition of Rolex or Patek but so what, thats a plus to me.

PAM217 is my next one. The sandwich dial look is phenomenal.

I honestly didn't get the Panerai deal until I owned and wore one, completely changed my thoughts on the brand.

If you have ~ 6k used budget, get an IWC Portuguese Automatic in steel used.

7 day power reserve, in house movement, classic design, nice history on the watch, perfect size ~42mm.

We have a pre-owned one ATM as well :)

Trust me, it's worth the money... so much of a step up from your average Panerai, Omega, Tag, Breitling (Sorry ;) ), or even Rolex :)-p).

I assume for $6,000, you can stop time with this watch right?

Does it keep better time then my Fossil maybe? I know I dont have
    to wind my Fossil.....

Nope, you're Fossil will keep much better time than just about any mechanical watch :)

A Prius also gets better gas mileage than a Ferrari ;)

    Omega.....yes.

    Panerai......who ?

The Omega at least looks like it is worth the $$$....the Panerai OTOH......well.....Casio could substitute.....do what Whart said.....it makes more sense IMHO.

I have had "LOTS" of people ask if I bought my car second hand............but my watch ? Don't even worry about it......second hand watches are brilliantly priced and don't require tri-annual belt services.!!!

Since when does Tag Heuer have anything to compete with Omega's Coaxial movement?

I think Omega represents one of the best values of all manufacturers. If you can find one of the limited edition coaxials in white, yellow, or rose gold you would have a very special watch.

I am not a big Panerai fan. It's a fine watch, but for the same money I would be looking at JLC, IWC and possibly a Blancpain.

Yeah I guess Omega is going to start poing Co-axials in all their watches now :)

JLC is probably the best value. Fair prices and great in house movements.

IWC is my personal favorite manufacture, with Ulysse Nardin and Audermars right there.

Patek, Blancpain, Vacheron, and Breguet are amazing as well, but they personally too classic for me right now :)

I agree Panerai are almost a fad (a very American fad). They're oversized and not particularly attractive; certainly not elegant, IMO.

Comparing Omega to TAG Heuer doesn't make any sense. TH is basically a marketing company which outsources everything. Very different from the Heuer watch maker of old.

I'm still lusting after a yellow gold Reverso Due with black leather band. How much $ would I be looking at, new and second-hand?

I don't like the fact that it is not self-winding and lacks a date function, but I can't get over the looks. :)
