    I have to retension my belt but am having a difficult time getting to the adj. nut & bolt on the alternator. I am working with the car on jack stands. Would this task be substanially easier with the car on a lift or is it just one of those hard to reach places?

    I use a long broom handle to tension the belt then I tighten the nut on the alt. with my other hand.

    I use a pry bar wrapped in a cloth wedged between the alternator and the motor and apply gentle pressure to it as the adjustment bolt is tensioned. Generally you can get the adjuster "stiff" so that it will not slide back and release tension but still preserve the ability to tweak the position with a little effort on the pry bar.
